Position: Instructor – 2026 Junior Resident Fellows Program (Center for Khmer Studies)__Deadline:01-January

Location:Siem Reap, Cambodia
Duration:Short-Term
Reporting to:CKS focal point
Salary:Competitive salary based on qualifications

The Junior Resident Fellows Program offers students from Cambodia, France, and the United States a once-in-a-lifetime experience, enabling them to live and study alongside peers from different backgrounds and cultures while learning about contemporary Cambodian history and society. The Junior Resident Fellows Program is funded by the Louisa Sarofim Foundation.

Brief Program Activities

The program is structured around two hourly interactive classroom sessions and select field trips to historical and cultural sites in and around Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Fellows are based at the CKS campus in Siem Reap, situated on the historic grounds of Wat Damnak, with a short field trip to Phnom Penh capital city of Cambodia. Field trips will also include visits to national and international NGOs that are relevant to the program and the fellows’ research interests. Classroom sessions will begin by briefly covering Cambodia’s early history before examining the major social, political, economic, and cultural changes that have occurred since the country gained independence from France in the early 1950s. Particular attention will be paid to Cambodia’s recent past and the ways in which the country is re-engaging with regional and international communities.

US and French Fellows will receive daily Khmer language classes, while Cambodian Fellows will receive a daily one-hour academic English class. Each fellow will work on a small research project of their choice. They present their final presentations and submit their final research outcomes, which can be presented in a research paper (10-15 pages) or in alternative formats. The Instructor guides and supports these projects.

Outside of the classroom, in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, fellows will have the opportunity to engage with a broad array of nonprofit organizations and other institutions, such as museums, archives, temples, health centers, and more. Total student-instructor contact time is 45 hours; this does not include time spent on field trips.
