The Social worker plays a crucial role in direct interaction with children, families, local authorities, program managers, schools and godparents.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1. Social Programs Management
The Social Worker is responsible for several social programs under Phnom Penh’s responsibility. He/She shall get a strong knowledge and understanding of the environment of each program, in order to ensure the quality and sustainability of the aid provided by Enfants du Mékong and propose evolution for each programs he/she is responsible for.
Main tasks are:
Manage ‘recruitment’ of new children:
Ensure a close social follow-up with the families:
Ensure academic follow-up of the children
Maintain the communication between sponsored children and their godparents:
Ensure “Sales Force” and “Courrier d’Asie” use and up-date according to the above activities for their programs (new godchildren, up-date godchildren profiles, annual letter
to godparents, annual news of program, ...).
2. Educational and vocational advice for Godchildren’ orientation
- Reports directly to the Social Team Manager, with an additional reporting line to the Centre Manager (one level up) for overall operational matters.
- Functional report to Head of Social Department for technical support & specific social matters.
Responsible:
- Identifying and understanding the needs of the children and families.
- Visiting families to ensure alignment with EDM’s policy.
- Following-up their education and helping for their studies orientation, through a personalised approach.
- Respecting Child Rights and Protection policies, as well as EDM rules and values.
- Work in collaboration with other EDM centres on matters related to social services in Cambodia.

- Collect and verify all necessary information.
- Visit families to confirm alignment with EDM social guidelines.
- Record comments and report concerns (if any).
- Present each case to Social Team Manager and Centre Manager for final decision.
Ensure a close social follow-up with the families:
- Visit their home place once a year (minimum, more often if required).
- During the visit, discuss about following topics: health, hygiene, harvest & food, work in the fields, debt, schooling and education.
- Record comments and report major up-dates.
- For this task, the social worker shall work closely with local authorities and school representatives (teachers, schools principal, …).
Ensure academic follow-up of the children
- Collect and check attendance and results from their schools.
- Conduct internal evaluations or check they are taking part in on-line tests.
- Check children’s notebooks.
- Propose specific support and solutions when children experienced difficulties.
- Record comments and report major up-dates.
- For this task, the social worker shall work closely with school representatives (teachers, school principals, …).
Maintain the communication between sponsored children and their godparents:
- Ensure the godchildren write one letter every 3 months.
- Before sending them for translation, ensure their content is appropriate and answer godparents’ questions.
- • Preparation and management of monthly distributions:
- • Verify and update distribution list before the distribution date.
- • During the distribution:
- Collect letters from godchildren for their godparents, and distributes letters sent by godparents.
- Ensure thorough distribution of sponsorships.
- Record attendance, comments and report major up-dates.
- Monitor monthly expenses and compare them to the monthly incomes for each of your program.
Ensure “Sales Force” and “Courrier d’Asie” use and up-date according to the above activities for their programs (new godchildren, up-date godchildren profiles, annual letter
to godparents, annual news of program, ...).
2. Educational and vocational advice for Godchildren’ orientation
- Have a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the vocational and academic training existing in Phnom Penh area. Collect booklets from the various schools and vocational training centers to provide it to the students.
- Perform a specific and very close educational and personal follow-up of the godchildren studying in grade 9 and Grade 12. This reinforced follow-up shall start from Grade 8 to anticipate any change of studies orientation and prepare the children and their families to align. Get a practical approach: advise them about the studies and jobs they can pursue, organize visits of vocational training centers, present success stories of previous godchildren, …
- Attend the orientation forums being held in Phnom Penh with the godchildren of your programs.
- Ensure a clear and up-date communication of EDM’s rules for scholarship application’s criteria.
- Build good relationship with partner schools and universities, and visit them.
