2. BACKGROUND:
Conservation International (CI) has worked in Cambodia since 2001 to protect nature for the benefit of humanity. Through science, policy, fieldwork, and finance, we spotlight and secure the most important places in nature for the climate, biodiversity, and for people. With offices in 30 countries and projects in more than 100 countries, CI partners with governments, companies, civil society, Indigenous peoples, and local communities to help people and nature thrive together.
3. SUMMARY:
The Biodiversity and Science Manager leads biodiversity research and project support to the conservation, community, and livelihood focused work for CI Cambodia’s Landscape Program. This includes the Cardamom Mountain Landscape in southwestern Cambodia, Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in central Cambodia, and Veun Sai Siem Pang National Park in the northeast. Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Landscape Manager and in collaboration with the Landscape Program team, the Manager will lead on the development and delivery of biodiversity monitoring, and other monitoring initiatives aimed to provide critical data needed assess the impacts of the conservation and livelihoods interventions, as well as identify new and emerging trends to which the program must adapt approaches. Activities will include leading the development and implementation of a biodiversity monitoring program, training and capacity building of various stakeholders including CI staff, local community members, and rangers. The Manger will lead the analysis and reporting of the project related data.
4. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development and implementation of biodiversity monitoring programs in the focal landscapes;
- Lead the implementation of carbon forest plot monitoring for the REDD+ project set-up and monitoring and verification;
- Conduct trainings of community members/groups, CI staff, and other stakeholders in survey and data collection techniques;
- Lead the analysis, write-up, and reporting of project related data;
- Lead the Landscape Programs’ Biodiversity and Science Team;
- Work with the Landscape Team to produce reports as required;
- Support the Landscape Team in the collection, collation, and analysis of Monitoring & Evaluation data as needed;
- Effectively engage stakeholders including donors, government ministries, NGOs, technical colleagues and other partners important to program success; and
- Any other work assignments, duties, and/or functions as CI or its management may designate or instruct in the course of its operation, which may include assignments, duties, and/or functions that vary from the above.
5. PEOPLE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the Science and Biodiversity Team; and
- Oversee and manage proper usage and care of research and monitoring equipment.
6. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation, Ecology, Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Climate Change, Development Studies, or other relevant development field; Master’s degree preferred;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Solid attention to detail and strong research and proofreading skills;
- 5-8 years of experience in natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, forestry, capacity building, and local stakeholder issues;
- Strong understanding of biodiversity survey/sampling techniques, especially camera trapping, and distance sampling;
- Capability to compile and analyze biodiversity data and produce biodiversity survey and monitoring reports;
- Physically fit and able to trek and camp in rural/forest conditions over multiple days;
- Ability to function well in a multicultural, diverse, and fast-paced work team environment;
- Comfortable working in rural communities with minimal facillities;
- Advanced fluency in written and spoken English and Khmer;
- Experience working in the Cardamom Mountain Landscape and other other protected areas in Cambodia;
- Comfortable managing multiple duties and adapting to changing priorities;
- Service focus. Courteous, tactful, and proven ability to work effectively with others; and
- Ability to work under general supervision and take initiative to solve problems under supervisor direction.
7. WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Typical office environment. May need to work extended hours as needed; and
- Frequent travel to the rural and remote areas.
