CIS seeks experienced candidates for the position of Director of Swimming.
The Director of Swimming will design and lead the delivery of the CIS co-curricular swim program for students of all ages. They will also assist with the organization of swim meets at CIS and at other schools; organizing and teaching after-school swim programs for CIS students and staff; and supervising the health and safety and maintenance protocols of the swimming pool facilities.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Athletics Director to develop a long-term vision and plan for the development of young athletes at CIS.
- Incorporate Canada’s Long Term Athlete/Swimmer Development Model into the CIS Swim Program. Use this model to develop season plans and practice plans. Maintain documentation of these seasons and practice plans in Google Drive.
- Plan and lead competitive coaching sessions; monitor and record training performances
- Plan and lead learn-to-swim sessions and water safety programs
- Establish clear learning objectives for swimming sessions; apply student assessment and evaluation practices that accurately reflect the learner outcomes (in collaboration with the Swimming Coaches), and complete associated administrative tasks
- Create an inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment, and use positive behavioral supports, as per the Alberta Education Teaching Quality Standard.
- Create opportunities for students of all skill levels to train and compete.
- Train, assess, and supervise swim coaches for the CCA and ECA programs.
- Conduct routine risk assessment and safety inspections of the swimming facilities including the pool areas, equipment and water
- Ensure that swim team staff (internal and external) are following the CIS Child Safeguarding Policy, and work to strengthen these policies in the pool setting.
- Organize local and international swim meets at CIS
- Respond to parent emails and lead CIS communication to families
- Coordinate the use of the swimming pool and pool equipment with the PE teachers, the Student Activities Coordinator, and EFI
- Maintain the pool calendar and coordinate the use of the swimming pool by school and campus members in coordination with the Senior Leaders, PE teachers, the Student Activities Coordinator, and EFI.
- Coordinate after-school swimming pool use.
- Foster positive school-community relations by keeping community aware of and responsive to swim programs, including communication with parents, students and staff about swim team schedules, policies, and procedures
Qualifications and Experience
- Swim coaching qualifications from an internationally recognized authority
- Experience coaching swimming and competitive swimming
- Experience working in an international school setting
- Lifeguard certification
- Leadership experience
- Qualification to certify others as lifeguards is desirable
- Good spoken and written English
- Swimming proficiency and in-depth knowledge of swimming strokes/techniques, strength conditioning for young swimmers, and age-appropriate coaching techniques
- Highly organized and able to manage detail-oriented administrative responsibilities
- Brings a positive mindset, humility, integrity and a solutions-focussed attitude
- Patient, flexible and adaptable
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Committed to supporting the overall well-being of the CIS community through the Swimming Program
