GIZ is a federally owned enterprise and is supporting the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMUSE), implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is seeking a Full Time National Intern for 6 months (01st February 2024 – 31st July 2024). This position is based in Siem Reap.
In 2016, the volume of waste generated in Southeast Asia reached around 150 million tons. It is estimated that waste generation will increase by 150% in 2025 compared to 1995 levels. In addition, the importance of tourism as a relevant economic factor is growing. This is accompanied by growing amounts of waste. In contrast to the large urban centers of the ASEAN countries, small and medium-sized cities have considerable difficulties in dealing with the increasing amounts of waste caused by population growth, changed consumer habits, and increasing tourism figures. On the other hand, the tourism sector is dependent on the attractiveness of clean cities, and the demand for sustainable tourism is constantly increasing. A disproportionately large number of women and migrants work in the informal sector, which plays an important role in the recycling of waste and offers employment and thus a livelihood, especially for low-income households.
To support ASEAN to tackle the above challenges, the Federal Government of Germany through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close cooperation with the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) has initiated the project ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management Enhancement (AMSUE) aims to contribute to improved environmental quality in medium-sized cities in the ASEAN region through strengthening the competences for optimizing waste disposal and recycling in small and medium-sized tourist cities.
The AMUSE project has defined the following output: (1) Supporting ASEAN digital knowledge platform provides sustainable knowledge, training, dialogue formats, and standards for optimizing municipal waste management and recycling for public and private stakeholders at national and local levels in ASEAN countries; (2) Medium-sized tourist cities are supported in the implementation of sustainable waste management by the respective responsible ministries in cooperation with tourism associations and other national actors active in the waste and tourism sector. ; (3) In Cambodia, Siem Reap is selected as a pilot for field-tested options for optimizing municipal waste management and recycling in terms of sustainability and gender sensitivity in medium-sized tourist cities are documented for further dissemination.
In order to support the pilot implementation in Siem Reap, AMUSE has placed a Development Advisor to bring experiences and expertise to support and improve cooperation in the fields of solid waste management and tourism with private sector stakeholders and local authorities in Siem Reap.
The national intern will work to support the AMUSE project and the Siem Reap Provincial Department of Environment. She/He works closely with the Development Advisor by assisting with interpretation, translation, communication, and support in the planning, and implementation of project activities as well as conducting research for documents and information related to Solid Waste Management and tourism industry for the project used.
