The Opportunity
Under supervision of the Entomology Manager, the Assistant Field Entomology Technician will be responsible for timely and high-quality field entomological work and will assist the lab technician laboratory and entomology team to conduct the trainings on entomology to national malaria program and sub-national level.
Project Description
The PMI Evolve Project supports the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID to plan and implement an integrated vector control strategy with the overall goal of reducing the burden of malaria while promoting equity to sustain malaria gains. Abt has implemented integrated vector control for PMI since 2011, delivering high-quality indoor residual spraying (IRS), technical assistance for insecticide-treated net (ITN) distribution and durability monitoring, and new approaches for larval source management (LSM). Additionally, Abt’s PMI-funded work manages the most comprehensive malaria vector entomological surveillance programs in 21 African countries to inform malaria vector control trends, strategies, and impact. Under the PMI Evolve Project, Abt will further its delivery of integrated vector control programs by partnering with local communities, organizations, and governments to co-design and co-implement tailored malaria vector control programs. The end goal is fighting malaria while strengthening local capacity to sustain malaria gains.
Core Responsibilities
- Support implementation of the following set of entomological field activities:
- support selection of sites and houses for placement of traps
- set up night-time mosquito collections in villages and forest using various trapping techniques (CDC-light trap, double net traps, and cattle baited traps)
- supervising local field assistants during mosquito trapping activities
- insecticide susceptibility testing according to WHO protocols
- morphological identification of Anopheles mosquitoes using identification keys
- storing mosquito samples for later molecular analysis
- pinning mosquito samples to prepare a specimen library
- support the management of entomological inventory and equipment maintenance
- Participate in other field activities as required.
- Assist with procurement requests related to the field entomological activities.
- Adhere to the Standard Operational Procedures for these activities.
- Support when required Laboratory Technician in managing selection, pre-processing, labelling, and registration of mosquito samples prior to transfer to the laboratory.
- Adapt and adopt novel data and sample management solutions.
- Ensure proper and timely data recording and entry.
- Frequent visits to the field and sentinel sites for mosquito collection.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree + Two years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree

Preferred qualifications
- Bachelors in bio-chemistry, laboratory, veterinary or other related health field.
- Experience in entomological field work.
- Knowledge in computer skills (able to run programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel).
- Experience in conducting mosquito bisection and/or dissecting mosquito ovaries and salivary glands is an advantage.
- Knowledge of English, oral and written, is a must.
