Driver / Messenger 

Main purpose of job:

Official Driver is an exciting role that supports strengthening the UK - Cambodia partnership by providing official transport to the HM Ambassador, staff and visiting officials.  Working closely with the Transport Manager and other drivers to provide safe and reliable transport, the Official Driver plays an important role in ensuring that we are able to deliver a range of objectives for  His Majesty’s Government (HMG).  Other responsibilities include vehicle maintenance, route planning and ad hoc support, as directed by the Transport Manager. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  • Drive the Flag Car and other pool cars for all members of staff including the Ambassador (these responsibilities to be rotated).
  • Provide reliable, safe and well planned services with a focus on customer service.  
  • Daily review of transport bookings with the Transport Manager to support an effective transport service and adherence to the Transport Policy.
  • Route Management - offer potential alternative route options for out of city moves, to proactively consider changes to route availability in line with seasonal events; flooding, increased road use in particular areas, or similar.
  • Provide driving support for visitors to the British Embassy including being actively involved in the planning of routes, liaising with key visit stakeholders and being able to work in fast paced and ambiguous conditions during the visit.
  • Daily disinfection & sanitising of all vehicles to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Weekly cleaning of all official cars, including additional cleaning prior to major visits.
  • Daily start of day searching and enhanced vehicle searching techniques, for when out of city visits require that the vehicles are left unprotected.
  • Sending vehicles for timely and regular servicing & technical inspections as required, with escalations to the Transport Manager.  
  • Monitoring of deadlines for Road Tax and Insurance including the provision of quotations to the Transport Manager.
  • Updating fuel usages and receipts of Total Club cards on a weekly basis.
  • Support the Transport Manager and Corporate Services Manager, to which this role reports, with any driving related policy changes and feed into decisions on car purchases.
  • Support Health & Safety work at post.
  • Take part in embassy wide events to create an inclusive supportive work environment.

Essential on Arrival:

  • Must have a valid Cambodia driving license with no points deducted & no serious traffic offences in the past 12 months.
  • Excellent knowledge of the road network and traffic system in Cambodia
  • Excellent knowledge of all relevant traffic laws in Cambodia
  • Able to use Ms Office
  • Previous experience as a limousine or private driver
  • Must be smartly presented
  • Able to work under pressure and with staff of all levels
  • Must have a flexible approach to working hours and be able to perform duties on weekends and public holidays or after office hours as and when required.


  • Previous experience in an Embassy or International Organisation environment
  • Previous experience driving VIPs

Based on the needs of the Embassy and approval from the jobholder’s line manager, there will be the option to work remotely for up to one day per week.
