The Khmer Language and Culture Program (KLCP) provides an opportunity for US and non-US faculty, post-graduate researchers, and upper level undergraduates to participate in an intensive eight-week study abroad program, from June 10 to August 2, 2024, in Phnom Penh with field trips to Siem Reap, Cambodia. This ongoing program is administered in collaboration with the University of Hawai’i, Mānoa’s (UHM) Khmer Language Program. This CKS program is designed for those who wish to develop their Khmer language skills and gain a better understanding of contemporary Cambodian society for academic and professional purposes, but who have not completed two years of formal Khmer language training. CKS is seeking to hire:
- One Khmer Language Instructor to teach a beginner-level course for 8 weeks (7 weeks in Phnom Penh and 1 week in Siem Reap).
Roles and Responsibilities
Teach a beginner-level course of Khmer language and culture [to students from the USA]. The instructor can use their own materials together with the CKS textbook.
The morning schedule is fixed: Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
The afternoon schedule is flexible depending on the scheduled activities and shared duties with the Field Coordinator and Teaching Assistants (TAs). It is generally from 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM.
Monday and Thursday afternoons: visits to NGOs or hosting guest speakers.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons: working with students on individual projects.
Working Period:
- Student Recruitment: After the application deadline for the program, the instructor will spend no more than 30 minutes with each applicant to assess their level of Khmer language by using his/her own method or materials. Approximately 7-8 students in total. The result of the assessment will be shared with CKS.
- Pre-program: One month prior to the start of the program, the instructor will spend approximately 5-10 hours to refine and prepare the curriculum and syllabus with the local Field Coordinator and Project Director .
- During the program: The instructor will work full-time from June 10 to August 02, 2024 (8 weeks).
- Post-program: The instructor will prepare and submit the student records, assignments, and evaluations to CKS.
Requirements:
- Cambodian citizens only.
- Significant knowledge of the Khmer language, culture, history and current issues.
- A Master’s degree in linguistics or literature or the equivalent
- Significant experience teaching the Khmer language to foreigners
- Significant experience teaching the Khmer language at the university level.
- Very good English
- Knowledge of integrating technology in language and culture instruction
- Energetic and innovative.
