The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff. Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose: The Post-doctoral Fellow will implement socio-economic research that contributes to the Asian Mega Delta Initiative, and potentially other research projects in the IRRI-Cambodia Office. This research covers studies that examine the adoption and socio-economic incentives for specific cropping systems and practices. The incumbent will also contribute to research on inclusiveness of these systems and practices, or how these potentially benefit (or disadvantage) various stakeholders, different types of farmers, gender, and age groups. Contribution to understanding multi-stakeholder linkages, governance and broader policies in the current systems and systems in transition is also expected from this post.

This position will be based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and is open for international applications.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement socio-economic research on sustainable and equitable cropping systems and farming practices, including gender-based socio economic constraints and opportunities for technology adoption
  • Quantitatively analyze socio-economic survey data including adoption of specific practices, costs and benefits, and other potential socio-economic impacts including gender and social dimensions related to development and adaptation
  • Contribute to research on policy and governance studies
  • Support the implementation of multi-stakeholder platforms (networks or hubs for learning) by examining insights on inclusive innovations to ensure equitable benefits for varied groups including ethnic minorities, women farmers/farm managers and young farmers
  • Collaborate with consultants, scientists across the CGIAR, national partners and the research team to co-design and implement socio-economic studies
  • Work with partners at IRRI Cambodia, as well as those in other countries of the Asian Mega Delta Initiative. Foster good working relationships with national research and extension partners, both in public and private sectors, as well as donor representatives across the work region
  • Engage partners in advanced research institutes to actively pursue research and funding opportunities.
  • Communicate key messages and project progress with donors, policymakers, and other primary stakeholders
  • Lead the implementation of socio-economic research, provide analysis from survey data and qualitative studies
  • Contribute to policy and governance studies
  • Guidance to the project implementers, bringing insights for gender and inclusivity to ensure these are included in the process being piloted for sustainability transitions


Qualifications

  • PhD in economics or any related field or 10 years of equivalent training / experience

  • Has demonstrated quantitative skills and familiarity with mixed methods approaches
  • Has demonstrated analytical skills
  • Proven ability or potential to integrate gender and social dimensions in research design and analysis
  • Has excellent organizational skills


Preferred

  • At least 3 years’ experience in applied research on agriculture, work experience in a developing country environment, especially in South East Asia
