Position: Vice President, Global Technical Services -- Nutrition International

Nutrition International is a not-for-profit organization governed by a dedicated international Board of Directors and led by an internationally recognized team of technical experts, program designers, advocates, analysts, evaluators, implementers, educators, resource managers and nutrition champions.
At an exciting time of growth and opportunity for the organization, we seek a Vice President for our Global Technical Team.  This permanent, full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will be located at our headquarters in Ottawa, Canada.

Overview of the Position
Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President, Global Technical Services (GTS) leads the quality assurance of Nutrition International’s research and programs, and the dissemination and translation of new knowledge to influence and improve national and global policies and practice. The VP also provides key inputs for strategic positioning and ensures that NI is appropriately represented at important conferences, workshops and other global nutrition platforms.
The department is composed of two sub-units: Quality Assurance and Technical leadership, and NTEAM. The former is focused mostly on NI’s implemented programs while N-TEAM provides external technical expertise to governments and other stakeholders. The VP oversees and supervises this team of 30+ staff which includes the Deputy Director, GTS, and the Director of the N-TEAM unit, and has global leadership responsibility for all technical staff.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Team Leadership
  •  Fosters a culture that embraces innovation, focuses on results and effectiveness, and supports the broad goals and purpose of the organization.
  • Ensure that Nutrition International attracts and retains highperforming professionals in all roles within the portfolio by effectively developing, managing, and mentoring staff.
Planning and Management
  • Develop and propose plans and budgets for inclusion in the annual Program of Work and Budget (PWB).
  • Oversee program and funding approvals for evaluations of NI programs, research projects, programming in innovative areas and other research work in accordance with delegated authorities.
  • Ensure that all projects are managed within budget and tracked correctly in the contracts database.
Quality Assurance and Technical Leadership
  • Ensure the quality and timeliness of internal Technical Assistance (TA) service needs.
  • Ensure an appropriate complement of technical staff for optimum delivery of technical services to different projects.
  • Build and negotiate an annual work plan for in-house TA service provision within budget limits, identifying and including any external TA needs in the work plan.
  • Negotiate team roles and responsibilities and service level agreements with other unit.
  • Develop and implement management systems to schedule, monitor and inform the troubleshooting of issues with day-to-day service provision to ensure timely and effective delivery.
Research
  • Lead the selection and implementation of global research opportunities.
  • Oversee the design and management of formative research, studies, surveys, innovative demonstration projects, and operations research projects.
Policy, Procedures, Strategy and Guidance
  • Establish and update policies, procedures and guidance for research work, for generating publications and for other relevant programming activities.
  • Develop and update the global impact strategy.
Representation
  • Develop and implement plans for NI representation.
  • Represent NI at relevant, high-level technical or other external meetings with government officials, the general public, media, academic constituencies, expert panels, working groups, partners and donors/funders.
  • Contribute to resource mobilization through the design/quality review of donor proposals.
Generate New Knowledge and Evidence
  • Maintain a high level of professional and academic standing by leading the generation of publications and other technical materials to support nutrition programming in individual countries, regionally and globally, and by maintaining an up to date knowledge of the evidence base as it impacts on all NI programming, and of the relevant work of other key actors.
Strategic Management
  • Contribute to strategic management through membership of the Executive Office and Executive Management Committee, with a special focus on providing technical guidance to the organization.
Board Support
  • As a key technical resource to the Board of Directors, attend and participate in all Board and Board committee meetings.
Experience                                                                           
  • Substantial experience and expertise monitoring, evaluating and managing nutrition or public health related programs in developing countries.
  • International experience leading people and programs, and managing issues and risks across borders.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in monitoring, evaluating, managing and/or advising on relevant projects and programs in developing countries.
  • Experience working with a programming organization in developing countries.
  • A solid track record of publications in peer reviewed journals, books, book chapters and other relevant publications.
Education/Professional Designations/Knowledge
  • Skilled user of Microsoft Office products and data analysis software.
  • PhD in epidemiology nutrition or public health with knowledge of nutrition.
Travel Required
  •  The position requires travel within the Americas, to Europe, and to Africa and Asia. Trips are usually expected to be short-term in duration (<3 90="" are="" days="" font="" more="" no="" overall="" per="" than="" travel="" usually="" weeks="" year.="" year="">
Language Skills
  •  Fluent in English is required.  French will be considered an asset.

Nutrition International offers a competitive compensation package including a comprehensive extended health, dental and vision benefits package, RRSP plan, Pension Plan, Life and Disability coverage, a learning and development allowance, and health and wellness allowance.  In addition, reasonable relocation expenses including flights to Ottawa for the employee and dependents, movement of household goods and temporary accommodation will be covered up to a maximum of $25,000.
The base salary for this role will be between $161,000 - $188,000 CAD.
