ANNOUNCEMENT
Under the applicable law, and in accordance with the terms of the
Agreement between the United Nations and the Royal Government of
Cambodia, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC)
has jurisdiction to try senior leaders and those who were most
responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal
law, international humanitarian law and custom, and international
conventions recognized by Cambodia, during the period of the Khmer Rouge
regime from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979.While the ECCC is
established as a national Court, the Royal Government of Cambodia sought
the technical assistance of the United Nations. In Resolution A/57/228
and A/57/228B, the General Assembly approved the involvement of the
United Nations and endorsed the agreement outlining the arrangements
between the two parties.
The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) was
established in 2005 to provide technical, operational and logistical
support to the ECCC in all aspects of the Court's operations. To learn

1. Reporting lines and administrative support
The incumbent works under the overall supervision of the Head of the
Interpretation and Translation Unit and the Senior Reviser and
Supervisor of the Interpretation and Translation Unit and the direct
supervision of the Translation Team Leader.
2. Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Translator will be responsible for the following duties:
• Translates documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by ECCC, i.e., mainly legal and evidentiary documents related to the ongoing investigations, trials and appeals before the Chambers.
• Controls the quality and revises outsourced translations, covering mainly evidentiary documents.
• Assists judicial organs, the prosecution and defence teams on linguistic/translation issues.
• Participates in the setting of new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.

3. Duration and location
The services may be required for 6 months or more, depending on the
translation needs and availability of funding. The Translator will work
remotely unless otherwise required.
4. Qualifications and experience
• A first-level degree in translation, law or related field from a
university or institution of equivalent status. (Candidates will be
subjected to UNAKRT Selective Translation Examination for Translators.).
• A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in translation. Relevant experience in the context of the United Nations, an international or national tribunal, an international organization or an international or a national body dealing with legal matters is desirable.
• Khmer, English and French are the official languages of the Court. For the post advertised, a perfect command of English, which must be the candidate’s main language, and a good command of Khmer are required, as demonstrated by passing the UNAKRT Selective Translation Examination. Knowledge of French is an asset.
• A minimum of three years of relevant work experience in translation. Relevant experience in the context of the United Nations, an international or national tribunal, an international organization or an international or a national body dealing with legal matters is desirable.

5. Assessment
Qualified applicants will be required to take the UNAKRT Selective Translation Examination for Translators.
6. Remuneration/Fees
Consultancy fees will be based on individual output depending on the
nature of the task (translation. 0.07 USD per word in the source
language for translations from English into Khmer ; 0.05 USD per word in
the target language for translations from Khmer into English, quality
control and revision: 0.04 word in the target language for translations
from Khmer into English)
No allowance such as DSA will be offered other than the fees specified above, for this position.
