The Division of Administration internship is for a period of two to six months depending on the needs of the division.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division or office to which they are assigned.

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote inclusive economic, social and environmental development and support regional cooperation and integration in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This internship is within the Office of the Chief, Division of Administration. Interns will gain first-hand experience with regard to the United Nations ESCAP’s activities in the area of administration, particularly in supporting the Administrative Officer in para-legal work. They will also gain a greater understanding of how the UN ESCAP works and its range of activities in the Asia-Pacific region.
 
Responsibilities
The intern will work directly with the Administrative Officer in the Office of the Chief of Administration. Duties include, but are not limited to:

•Supporting the Administrative Officer as the Secretary of the Grants Committee through
(i) reviewing submission of draft agreements in accordance with guidelines and established rules and regulations;
(ii) liaising with requesting offices regarding requirements; and
(iii) preparing draft agreements for signature.
•Assistance in managing office agreements for and providing administrative support to ESCAP offices away from Bangkok (10 offices in 8 locations)
(i) reviewing draft agreements and needs of offices;
(ii) drafting correspondence to the United Nations Headquarters; and
(iii) checking consistency across agreements.
•Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents
•Attending and summarizing meetings
•Conducting legal and internet research
•Working on web-presentation
•Compiling statistics
•Other duties as required

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
a)be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b)be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
c)have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.
•Be computer literate in standard software applications;
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
 
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;
 
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
