Health Program Specialist
World Renew is a Christian organization doing integrated community development in Cambodia since 1996. We work through 5 NGO partnerships and a network of 40 churches and Christian organizations to bring about transformational community development in approximately 120 rural communities. We work in 4 integrated sectors including: Food security and livelihoods, governance, health and education. The work is led by a dynamic and professional team with expertise in program planning, design, monitoring and evaluation and with sector expertise in agriculture and governance. We would like to add to this team an experienced community development practitioner to provide leadership to the team in health, especially water, sanitation and nutrition. The successful candidate must be able to work well in a team setting. He or she must be able to have a strong voice on the leadership team in guiding the integration of our work across sectors, and on cross cutting themes including gender, environment and inclusion. Finally the successful candidate must be able to contribute to our leadership team in ensuring that our work continues to be relevant as the context in Cambodia changes.
Overall Goals
The overall goals of the health program specialist include:
- Manage and lead all aspects of the health program of World Renew including planning, monitoring, and reporting on results achieved in the health sector
- Build capacity of local partners and relevant groups in health technical skills, including following up of their implementations
- Contribute to the leadership team in ensuring that our work is integrated across sectors (e.g. nutrition and agriculture), that we are achieving sustainable results on cross cutting themes including gender, environment and inclusion and that our work continues to be relevant in the changing context in Cambodia.
Main Responsibilities
In order to achieve the goals indicated above the tasks to be undertaken by the health program specialist shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
Manage and lead all aspects of the health program
- Review Government of Cambodia health policies and other relevant international health guidelines
- Network with government and NGOs to identify relevant training materials and review them for appropriateness for World Renew and partner staff
- Identify and participate in health forums and meetings as appropriate
- Survey current work of World Renew and work with World Renew team to identify how nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene programming can be improved
- Work with World Renew team to develop a health strategy for World Renew and its partners and to prepare annual implementation plans to implement the strategy
- Work with the World Renew team to develop a set of essential nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene indicators that partners can measure on a regular basis and conduct a baseline study of these indicators
- Identify and work with collaborating partners to initiate and improve health program, including its integration with other sectors.
- Develop clear and innovative approaches and messages to achieve community awareness and promote desired community behaviors on nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene.
- Participate in data management work and report writing when necessary
- Plan and implement relevant qualitative research studies
- Select and develop relevant lesson plans and training curriculum
- Coordinate activities involving the training of staff, partner staff and village health volunteers in the use of the nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene messages
- Build capacity of World Renew staff, partners and target communities to ensure that they are able to continue to implement and monitor the nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene program.
- Conduct coaching and mentoring in health technical skills including following up their implementation progresses
- Continuously scan the environment, through participation on networks and through research, to identify changing socio-economic and demographic trends in Cambodia and recommend ways in which we can improve our programming to respond to these changes
- Participate in regular planning meetings with the World Renew program team to review the impact of our community development approach (including our partnerships, program design, planning, monitoring and evaluation) and to explore opportunities to improve our approach for improved sustainability, effectiveness and relevance
- An MA degree in the field of community development, public health/nutrition, nursing or related field highly desirable
- Proven experience in playing a leadership role in a team setting
- Excellent analytic and strategic thinking skills
- At least five years experience in community development with a focus on health or nutrition
- Experience in results based management, sector integration and cross cutting themes
- Experience in Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and Behavior Change Communication (BCC)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Experience in food security an asset
- Familiarity with participatory education methods
- Experience working through local partner organizations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in oral and written Khmer and English
- Computer proficiency and data management and analysis skills
- Understanding of Christian values and Christian world view an asset
