Job Title: Laboratory Technologist (1 full time position)
Location: Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia
Department: Bacteriology Unit
Job Requirement
- Cambodian national with Bachelor’s Degree in biology or chemistry or equivalent degree at a university or completion of a laboratory certificate or Diploma in medical technology
- Should have at least 2 years of clinical or laboratory experience OR 5 to 6 years work experience in biomedical sciences; Microbiology Laboratory experience is highly desirable
- Ability to learn specific, practical techniques and apply this knowledge to solve technical problems; Ability to use technical equipment with accuracy
- Experienced in performing Bacteria identification, Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST), media preparation, and sterilization and quality control is an advantage
- Very good English written and oral communication skills and capable of working independently
- Required computer software literacy including Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Access.
- Willing to work with villagers and train provincial hospital staff
- Under limited supervision will use standardized and accredited laboratory procedures to execute assays in the Bacteriology Laboratory Department.
- Provides supervision of the diagnostic microbiology laboratory and ensure Laboratory specific protocols and the Laboratory Safety Instructions are followed and will maintain a record of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer data files.
- Will examine and confirm quality of clinical samples from field sites, prepare media and/or reagents specific to Laboratory assays, perform Laboratory assays and procedures and handle specimens.
- Provides didactic and hands-on training in diagnostic microbiology using NAMRU-2 standard operating procedures as required by senior staff to laboratory technicians;
- Provides training to field personnel as required on study protocols and Laboratory procedures on specimen collection, processing and handling.
- Review laboratory worksheets for accuracy in pathogen identification and antibiotic sensitivity results.
- Supervises the availability of Laboratory supplies, reagents, media and equipment to ensure continuity of Laboratory operations.
- Collaborates with the Bacteriology section, Data and Field departments to ensure proper collection and transportation of specimens per study specific protocols. Responsible for specimen accessioning and processing to include the proper procedures for long-term cryopreservation.
- Provide data interpretation and critical analysis of results and reports all such findings to senior personnel. Perform technical procedures for the identification or susceptibility of bacteria, parasites, and mycobacteria. Read plates and tubes, as required, to determine the number of organisms in the sample and record findings on worksheet for verification.
- Prepares monthly reports on the activity of the diagnostic microbiology laboratory
- Perform microbiology staff competency evaluations.
- Provide assistance with increasing capacity of antibiotic susceptibility testing, AST quality control, documentation of problems and corrective action and reporting.
