The British Council is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and is keen to reflect the diversity of UK society at every level within the organisation. We welcome applications from all sections of the community. In line with the British Council's Child Protection policy, any appointment is contingent on thorough checks. In the UK, and in other countries where appropriate systems exist, these include criminal records checks.
The British Council was
founded to create ‘a friendly knowledge and understanding’ between the
people of the UK and wider world. We do this by making a positive
contribution to the countries we work with, using the cultural resources
of the UK such as art, sport, education, science, culture, language,
innovation, creativity and the sharing of the UK’s values and ways of
living. This makes a lasting difference to the UK’s security, prosperity
and influence.
We engage with millions of
children annually, both directly and indirectly, via a wide range of
activities. These are both digital and offline, including learning
English, taking exams and participating in a broad span of programmes
and projects. Protecting children that come into contact with the
British Council, whether directly or through our partners, therefore, is
a top priority reflected in a zero tolerance risk appetite for child
protection.
Across East and South Asia we
have a large network of teaching and examinations centres catering
primarily for young learners and young adult students. In addition, we
manage an extensive programme of projects in partnership with schools,
youth organizations and educational professionals.
Both regions are expanding their work with children.
Valuing diversity is essential
to the British Council’s work. We aim to abide by and promote equality
legislation by following both the letter and the spirit of it to avoid
unjustified discrimination, recognising discrimination as a barrier to
equality of opportunity, inclusion and human rights. All staff worldwide
are required to ensure their behaviour is consistent with our policies.
The opportunity:
The Child Protection Team
provides leadership and professional advice on the implementation of the
British Council global child protection strategy. Your role, as
Regional Child Protection Manager, is to provide regional leadership in
our East Asia and South Asia regions. Therefore, you will work with the
Corporate Child Protection Team and regional networks to implement a
Child Safe Programme, with an emphasis on ensuring a culture of
proactive child protection systems and safe practice.
You’ll be joining an
organisation that is supremely committed to the protection of children,
as illustrated by our membership of Keeping Children Safe (KCS), a
network membership organisation working to increase safeguards for
children in the international sector. In 2015 we were awarded level 1
‘child safe’ organisation status under the KCS Certification Scheme,
demonstrating our commitment to protecting children from abuse.
There will be frequent travel
in this role across the regions and you can expect to come to the United
Kingdom around 4 times per year for Global Child Protection meetings.
Please note that this position is to be based in a country within South Asia, yet to be agreed.
- Significant full time work experience in the child protection sector including international experience.
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Experience in the development and delivery of training
- A professional graduate or post graduate qualification in a child protection related field such as Social Work, Education, Law, Health or International Development.
- Eligibility to work in South Asia and to visit all East & South Asia countries
