Org. Setting and Reporting
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean (ECLAC\CEPAL) is one of the five regional commissions of the
United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing
to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes
supporting the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and
the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to
Governments, as well as support for regional and international

The internship in the Gender Affairs Division (www.cepal.org/mujer) will last 3 to 6 months, depending on the needs of the Division/Section. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis. Interns are expected to work on a full-time basis (work five days per week; 35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Division/Section to which they are assigned, but they may undertake flexible working arrangements, subject to certain conditions.

ECLAC’s Division for Gender Affairs specializes in gender-related issues
through an interdisciplinary focus. The Division plays an active role
to address gender inequality and women’s empowerment through developing
tools and providing evidence for policy formulation and effective
implementation and in gender mainstreaming with in regional development
in Latin America and the Caribbean. It works as a Technical Secretariat
of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean,
and it also hosts the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and
the Caribbean. Provides technical support to member States of the
Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean and of
the Presiding Officers of the Conference in their efforts to generate
new knowledge on gender indicators and statistics and build capacity for
developing and collecting gender statistics to inform decision-making,
in particular with regard to women’s economic empowerment. Carry on its
efforts to strengthen dialogue between users and producers of gender
statistics for policymaking. Governments also receive assistance in
building evidence-based policies for gender equality. Work is carried to
build the capacities of national machineries for the advancement of
women and of other stakeholders, such as statistical offices and
ministries of economy and labour, regarding the formulation, monitoring
and dissemination of gender equality policies.
The internship is UNPAID. All costs of travel and accommodation,
including living expenses, must be covered by the intern or any relevant
sponsoring institution.

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the
individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the
internship period. Daily duties may include:
- Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents
- Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
- Document, legal and internet research
- Assistance during conferences
- Working on web-presentation
- Compiling statistics
Additionally, the Intern will also perform the following duties:
a) Provide general research assistance to the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean and to the work of the Division.
b) - Research, extract and compile basic information and technical data on gender equality policies and related topics and issues.
- Assistance in monitoring gender equality policies and related issues by collecting, selecting, analyzing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
- Preparation of reports, presentations, tables, lists and graphs for information and review by supervisor.
c) General support to the work programme of the Division, including among other areas: e-learning courses, organization of expert meetings, websites. - Other tasks according to the needs of the Division, related to women's economic, physical and political autonomy, in the context of the work programme.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a univerity degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
- Be computer literate in standard software applications;
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of
differing opinions and views.

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English
and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Advanced knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for
the Internship Programme. Advanced Knowledge of English is required.
Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.
