The
successful candidate will implement new rice breeding knowledge and
technologies focused on developing improved rice varieties for temperate
environments and to coordinate all the activities of the Temperate Rice
Research Consortium (TRRC).
This position is based at IRRI Country Office in Gwonsun-Gu, Suwon, Republic of Korea. Internationally Recruited Staff benefits can be found here.
Roles and Responsibilities

In collaboration with partners, conduct breeding-related research in the Republic of Korea focused on developing varieties suitable for temperate rice environments

Conduct studies on discovering and characterizing new genes and QTLs for agronomic traits, grain quality, resistance to diseases and insects and tolerance to cold in japonica and indica genetic backgrounds

Explore novel breeding strategies and methods, with particular emphasis on the effective use of new biotechnological methods including genome-profiling and marker-assisted breeding strategies

Coordinate all the activities of the Temperate Rice Research Consortium (TRRC) and its working groups

Participate in capacity building and training activities for rice breeding, stress tolerance, and application of molecular markers in breeding programs

Act as IRRI's representative in Korea, liaising with national research partners and IRRI on all bilateral research activities
Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD degree in a discipline related to international agricultural research or agricultural development (agronomy, agricultural economics, etc.) or rural development
- Minimum of 10 years’ prior field experience in managing agricultural research projects or programs
- High level of strategic vision and leadership; ability to develop and communicate a common vision among diverse partners
- Proven expertise in leading teams and building partnerships for collaborative, interdisciplinary research for development and in managing complex work situations.
- Demonstrated ability to liaise with donors, national policymakers, public, civil society, and private sector organizations
Skills Required
- Experience working in Asia and good knowledge of cropping systems
