The International HIV/AIDS Alliance exists

We are seeking a Director of Operations who will be a new member of the Senior Management Team reporting to the CEO. The Director of Operations will be responsible for leading a comprehensive array of mature programmes and services supporting Alliance organisations across 40 countries, reviewing programmes and service delivery on an on-going basis. Crucially, as traditional funding streams are significantly changing with some countries experiencing considerable funding reductions this Director will lead the creation and development of new products to expand the commercial footprint of the Alliance, This might, for example, include working with private healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies and other businesses or agencies at national or global scale.
Candidates will bring strong commercial management expertise and experience of generating new and innovative income streams. They will have lived and worked in emerging markets, and have experience of designing, and project managing, strategic change. With strong stakeholder management experience, this individual will be a talented manager with the ability to influence others in a variety of cultures; motivating and inspiring team members, partners and potential partners alike. Relevant sector experience in healthcare would be desirable but is not essential. There will be the need for significant travel in this role, although it will be based in the UK.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
EXPANDING COMMERCIAL FOOTPRINT – Lead the development of new products to enter new markets and grow levels of earned income, increasing the Alliance’s capability to deliver without official donor assistance:
- Devise an earned income strategy and guide the organisations’ transitions to new business models.
- Create processes and systems to scope market opportunities, evaluate and create commercial or public product/service offer opportunities at national and global levels.
- Oversee implementation of new earned income focussed services.
- Execute a compelling business vision for HIV, health and rights services by working with the leadership from the Alliance Secretariat Africa, Latin America and Central America (LAC) and Asia/Eastern Europe teams to prioritize an expanding product portfolio that supports Alliance Linking Organisations (LOs) to achieve their strategic and financial sustainability and with the technical cooperation unit to continue the upward growth and commercial viability of technical support delivered through the regional hubs.
LEADING OPERATIONS – constantly re-evaluating the delivery of programmes and services:
- Lead and oversee the delivery of the Alliance’s strategic objectives in the regions.
- Leading Secretariat efforts to support improved coverage, scope and quality of HIV and health integrated programmes implemented through linking organisations and partners.
- Leading Secretariat efforts to calibrate our support, so as to effectively prioritise in meeting the needs of Linking Organisations and so have the greatest impact on the epidemic.
- Guide support to Linking Organisations who face management challenges as they transition from dependence on development assistance to national sources of funding.
- Facilitate the mobilisation of programme support and the collaboration between Regional and other Secretariat teams, to ensure appropriate accountability and organisational development support to in-country programmes.
MANAGING THE ALLIANCE – as a member of the Alliance Senior
Management Team, drive collaboration across the Secretariat and the
Alliance, to ensure that the needs of the LOs and Hubs are fully
understood.
- In partnership with the Culture Change Group, play a lead role in the development of the next generation of leaders at the Alliance Secretariat.
- Represent the Alliance internally and externally, establishing and communicating our image, and enhancing our visibility among internal and external strategic partners and customers.
- Co-ordinate and assist the Associate Directors in developing and monitoring strategies, workplans and budgets related to their specific areas of responsibility as appropriate.
- Guide the Associate Director Technical Co-operation Unit in taking the Alliance Technical Support Hubs to their next iteration.
- To develop and execute Alliance strategy that maximizes the localization of new products and programmes for LOs and regional technical support hubs, while exploiting the potential for global integration.
- Provide leadership and communication processes that remove functional silos and increase the effectiveness of the organization.
- Develop an innovative, performance oriented culture. Motivate, reward, and recognize innovation and excellence. Counsel, guide, and direct staff as needed and set the standards for business process excellence and continuous improvement.

Experience
Essential
- Strong business management skills along with proven ability to generate earned income.
- Prior experience of living and working in emerging markets.
- Bottom line orientation – focus on results and a bias to action. Significant experience in designing and implementing strategic change.
- Experience of running commercially based business lines, from design through planning and implementation phases and achieving demonstrable results.
- Demonstrated strength in customer relations: must have a strong customer focus and orientation, including proven ability to nurture key customer relationships at the highest level.
- Experience of representing organisations in external fora and with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Experience in the healthcare industry, preferably in HIV/AIDS and/or sexual and reproductive health.
- Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment.
- Fluency in French, Spanish or Russian.
