International Training on Ecosystem-Climate Interactions

International Training on Ecosystem-Climate Interactions
September 8-20, 2014. Beijing, China

Under combined pressure of climatic change and intense human use of natural resources, the natural environment in Asia has steadily degraded, hence ecosystem services are being affected. Impacts of climate change are especially visible in Asia on various sectors across different ecosystems. Impacts of climate change in Asia are already serious, and will very likely worsen in future. Environmental and ecosystems services sustainability are under serious threat. Meeting those science challenges requires understanding of the physical science basis of climate change, consideration of its impacts on all spheres of human activity, and development of policy strategies and actions. Training of young researcher and practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills will enable them to gain capacity for actively contributing to the process of climate change adaptation and ecosystem management in their respective countries and sub-regions.

Objectives of the Training:
The 2014 international training on ecosystem-climate interactions will provide young researchers and practitioners from Asia-Pacific countries with advanced knowledge and skills in this fast-moving field, and to enhance the environmental capacity building for the regional sustainable development. The training course is sponsored by APN (www.apn-gcr.org), and organized by START Regional Center for East Asia (TEA). It will address various scientific aspects of interactions between ever changing ecosystem and climate. The training sessions will cover multi-platform observation, trends and impacts analysis, and ecosystem and climate modeling. The curriculum will comprise lectures, seminars, along with site visits and excursions in CAS (www.cas.cn) research facilities and field stations.

Potential participants are expected to systematically learn scientific principles and methods on interactive changes of ecosystem and climate. After the completion of this course they should be able to gain capacity for actively contributing to the process of ecosystem management and climate change adaptation in their respective countries and regions.

Target Groups and Requirements:
This course is especially designed to meet the professional demand of Asian young scholars working in climate change sciences with special focus on ecosystem and climate change observation, analysis, and modeling. A corresponding professional background in atmospheric sciences, ecology, or earth sciences at M.S. or higher level is a prerequisite. The training courses will be taught in English. Therefore, a good command of the English language is a prerequisite for attending the training. The preferable age of participants is between 25 and 40 years.
