NEURASMUS - A European Master in Neuroscience: Advanced Courses and Research Training

The European Master of Neuroscience Programme Neurasmus is part of the European Neuroscience Campus network (www.enc-network.eu), a new organization of Neuroscience Centres in Europe, with the aim to organize - and formalize - research collaborations, align grant acquisition strategies and create exchange opportunities at all levels of education and professional work.

Neurasmus is a 2 year (120 ECT) full-time study programme taught in English, with a strong emphasis on training in cutting-edge techniques in all major topics of brain research, from molecules to cognition. Its main objective is to foster Neuroscience education and to train new brain scientists, by offering a unique interdisciplinary and integrated approach of normal brain function and of brain diseases. Students become qualified to formulate appropriate questions and propose and apply effective investigations to complex Neuroscience issues, to work in team effort as well as autonomously, to interpret and communicate results effectively and to find applications in order to reach to clinical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological targets.
  • Neurasmus is offered by 5 European Institutions and 1 Third Country Institution:
  • Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2, France
  • Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin und Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany
  • Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Georg August Universitat Göttingen - International Max Planck Research School, Germany
  • Universidade de Coïmbra, Portugal
  • Université Laval, Québec, Canada

4 main study tracks with sub-specializations are offered and reflect the strengths of the consortium institutions:
Neurogenetics and Neural Plasticity
Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology
Neurophysiology
Medical Neurosciences

During year 1, students follow a common core curriculum that provides a common basis of the main subject areas for all and also receive first specialization in a field of interest. The programme consists of advanced seminars, tutorials, practical and lab rotations. Advanced specialization modules are taken between September and December during year 2. Students also carry out a 6 month research/industrial project within their study track and submit it as a thesis (30 ECTS). During the two years of the Master, every student will have to go through at least two host institutions of the consortium and all students together will attend joint advanced workshops and meetings.

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) in biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences or psychology. Additional requirements will be asked from candidates with a Bachelor's degree in another subject. A thorough proficiency in English is required (IELTS: 6.5/ TOEFL Pbt 580/ Cbt 237). Upon successful completion of the programme, students are awarded joint or multiple/double degrees, from each of the main institutes they study at, with a diploma supplement that describes their study track and the overall study programme.
