MEREMMC - EUROPEAN MSc in MARINE ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES

MEREMMC is a Joint European MSc programme that brings together Marine Environment and Resources (MER) as the basis of its academic foundations. It was conceived by EHU, SOTON, UB1 and ULg with the invaluable contribution of Associates, that cover nearly all the scopes/profiles of research in MER within a global ocean context.

The objectives are: (a) to achieve postgraduate education of academic excellence, with solid conceptual foundations and a strong practical component; (b) to confer upon students a translational science approach (they receive advanced formation in diverse disciplines -biological, chemical, geological and physical oceanography), with contents that range from cellular/molecular biology, to large-scale processes or management (e.g. from genomics to remote sensing or fisheries); (c) to provide students with the ability to study independently and manage a comprehensive project, within a global framework; and (d) to prepare postgraduates for leadership in research, teaching, consultancy and technical management. The programme runs full-time over 24 months (120 ECTS) and consists of advanced courses (90 ECTS) and a Masters Thesis, with a dissertation (30 ECTS). Student mobility is compulsory. Within the course, students choose between 3 alternative pathways (UB1-EHU-SOTON; UB1-EHU-ULg; SOTON-EHU-ULg). The instruction language is English, at all of the Partner Universities. The research work will be entirely, or jointly, undertaken in SOTON, EHU, UB1 and ULg, or in Associates in Europe or overseas; these will host a student on the basis of the field of his/her Master thesis. Every student follows an "individually-tailored" programme, by combining the different disciplines that can be studied at each of the Partner Universities: Coastal Management or Advanced Oceanography, in SOTON; Marine Non-living Resources or Marine  Environment, in UB1; Marine Living Resources or Marine Pollution and Ecosystem Health, in EHU; and Marine Biology and Ecology, in ULg. The coursework is arranged in 6 modules: Ocean Science"(basic foundations or aspects of general interest; mandatory); Global Ocean Environment; Marine Environment Protection and Resources exploitation; Marine Environment and Resources Management; Interpretation of Environmental Data; and Research in MER.

The MSc Thesis research is undertaken during Semester 4. All of the MSc Theses are presented in joint viva sessions, at the end of September, in EHU. The Graduation Ceremony takes place as the concluding part of the viva sessions. EHU (as coordinating institution) will issue a Joint Degree Diploma. The learning outcomes are relevant to undertake integrated, multidisciplinary research on marine environment or resources and their interactions (ocean health, biodiversity conservation,
resources exploitation, pollution control and coastal zone management). Career prospects are promising, ranging from fundamental and applied science, to consultancy and management.
