CoDe - Joint European Master in Comparative Local Development

International development as a subject of analysis, research and consultancy has emerged as major disciplinary area since the early 1990s. During the last two decades the practical know-how of facilitating international development has gradually evolved into a science in its own right. In the international arena a wide range of experiences has been matured on how to establish and maintain
institutions capable to efficiently absorb foreign and local aid in developing and post-socialist countries.

Theories and techniques have been developed in order to facilitate the transition to market economy and to democracy. This body of knowledge has been increasingly integrated into a unified paradigm and approach that combines the insights of a wide range of social sciences including sociology, economics, political science and anthropology. As the volume of funds dedicated to aid policy increased and the planning and management of development projects/programmes have become more decentralised at the local level, the respective implementing organisations needed an ever growing number of practitioners, and the job market for development experts has further increased. The Joint European Master in Comparative Local Development - CoDe is a response to the above mentioned increasing demand on knowledge and experts. In ten years of the master’s history the main objective has been to provide participants with the widened knowledge and skills for introducing,
supporting and co-ordinating processes of change and transformation at the local level.

The comparative and interdisciplinary master course focuses on local development, with the following achieved objectives and characteristics: the involvement of public, private and non-governmental agents, the strengthening of social stability and economic prosperity, in accordance with the European/EC law and development standards.CoDe has selected local development as an integrating paradigm which helps to explain the factors of development and to plan coherent and feasible development policies. The master course trains local development professionals who are able to cooperate with experts of various specialised professions and sectors and at the same time can focus on the development perspective. Local development professionals are expected to integrate knowledge into the planning and implementation of development strategies at the local and regional level.Among local development oriented courses CoDe is distinctive with the formation of four key features such as inter-disciplinary approach, local perspective, comparative method, and European dimension compared with third country experiences.
