“Teuk Saat 1001” is a Cambodian non-governmental organization created as an offshoot of a safe drinking water supply project in rural area in partnership with the French NGO “1001 fontaines pour demain”. The first stage of the initiative started in 2005, in North West Cambodia. There are currently f 50  sites in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap  providing more than 50,000 people daily with safe drinking water. “Teuk Saat 1001” is committed to act as a service platform for all production sites of safe water and as a project manager to set-up new safe water production sites

The mission and vision of “TEUK SAAT 1001” is to improve the health of rural people through the initiative to create safe drinking water in a  sustainable manner.

. The proposed objective of our non-profit association is to empower rural communities by enabling them to produce  guaranteed quality of drinking water at an affordable price, based on a social enterprise business model, which ensures that they are self-sufficient and reach the largest number of beneficiaries.

Main activity
The “1001 fontaines” solution uses water that is available locally - surface water from swamps, rivers, ponds, and purifies it from bacteria contamination ( using ultraviolet rays ), at very low cost, in order to eliminate a high percentage of the risk of disease. In addition on-site education programs on the importance of hygiene  are provided. The purified water is sold at a fixed price of USD 0.01 per litre and distribution is done using 20 litre  containers, which are disinfected, closed and sealed, thereby guaranteeing  quality for the end-consumer.

The management of the operating site and distribution to families and schools is undertaken by an entrepreneur recruited within the village and trained through our Social Entrepreneur Academy. This approach, combined with the support of the local platforms, ensures that the solution is sustainable and that villagers receive a quality service.

The local NGO acts as a service platform to fulfill the needs of entrepreneurs located in villages: it supplies safe drinking water, water quality control, technical assistance,  business advice and help  recruiting   clients. In exchanges for these services the entrepreneurs pay monthly fees to the platform.

The sustainability of “1001 fontaines” model relies on the ability of the small private operator (SPO) running the water production site to manage and develop the business activity of their site, and then to become a real entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is an individual who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator — a generator of new ideas, and business processes. Management skill and strong team building abilities are often perceived as essential leadership attributes for successful entrepreneurs.)

Though, a Social Entrepreneurship Academy has been developed in order to integrate the SPOs into a training path that aims at developing their business management skills and entrepreneurship abilities. This “academy” aims at training in 6 main fields of skills : water treatment and water quality;business; water delivery organization; sales and clients recruitment; leadership; mission of health. Those skills are transferred to the SPO on the field at the occasion of the monthly visit made by animators, and bi-annual workshop organized at the NGO gathering all SPO at the same level.

This Academy started  at the end of 2012 and after nearly one year of implement, a first evaluation and feedback from the field team showed that some adjustments  have to be made, in order to increase the abality of the academy to improving skills of the PSO’s..
