The first stage of the initiative started in 2005, in North West Cambodia. Mission
The mission and vision of “TEUK SAAT 1001” is to improve the health of rural people through the initiative to create safe drinking water in a sustainable manner.
. The proposed objective of our non-profit association is to empower rural communities by enabling them to produce guaranteed quality of drinking water at an affordable price, based on a social enterprise business model, which ensures that they are self-sufficient and reach the largest number of beneficiaries.
Main activity
The “1001 fontaines” solution uses water that is available locally - surface water from swamps, rivers, ponds, and purifies it from bacteria contamination ( using ultraviolet rays ), at very low cost, in order to eliminate a high percentage of the risk of disease. In addition on-site education programs on the importance of hygiene are provided. The purified water is sold at a fixed price of USD 0.01 per litre and distribution is done using 20 litre containers, which are disinfected, closed and sealed, thereby guaranteeing quality for the end-consumer.
The management of the operating site and distribution to families and schools is undertaken by an entrepreneur recruited within the village and trained through our Social Entrepreneur Academy. This approach, combined with the support of the local platforms, ensures that the solution is sustainable and that villagers receive a quality service.
The local NGO acts as a service platform to fulfill the needs of entrepreneurs located in villages: it supplies safe drinking water, water quality control, technical assistance, business advice and help recruiting clients. In exchanges for these services the entrepreneurs pay monthly fees to the platform.

This Academy started at the end of 2012 and after nearly one year of implement, a first evaluation and feedback from the field team showed that some adjustments have to be made, in order to increase the abality of the academy to improving skills of the PSO’s..
