Summary

In 2012 Root Capital launched a five-year strategic plan that calls for raising $70M in philanthropy to support our ambitious plans for growing our global impact. In order to meet this challenge, the organization seeks a talented and passionate Sr. Manager Institutional Relations to oversee our engagement with foundations and other philanthropic institutions that provide the majority of philanthropic funds for Root Capital.
The Sr. Manager Institutional Relations will be responsible for creating and executing a successful fundraising strategy and overseeing institutional relationship management. S/he will be in charge of institutional pipeline management, effective proposal development, and thoughtful stewardship.
 

Mission and History of Root Capital

Root Capital’s mission is to grow rural prosperity by investing in small and growing agricultural businesses that build sustainable livelihoods in Africa and Latin America.
Root Capital is a nonprofit social investment fund that grows rural prosperity in poor, environmentally vulnerable places in Africa and Latin America by lending capital, delivering financial training and strengthening market connections for small and growing agricultural businesses.
Root Capital clients include associations and private businesses that help create sustainable livelihoods by aggregating the products of hundreds, and often, thousands of farmers. Since our launch in 1999, we have provided more than $400 million in credit to over 460 small and growing agricultural businesses.
Root Capital envision a thriving financial market serving agricultural businesses that generate long-term social, economic, and environmental sustainability for small-scale farmers and their communities around the world. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Root Capital currently has associated offices in Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and Kenya.
 

Responsibilities

  1. Oversee institutional relationship management (70%)
    • Oversee the development and implementation of engagement strategies with prospective and current institutional donors to help Root Capital meet its goals.
    • Manage day-to-day relationships with a portfolio of up to 100 accounts and leads, and/or provide support to senior colleagues in relationship management as appropriate. 
    • Provide guidance and support to two direct reports with responsibility for pipeline management, grant-writing, select relationship management, and stewardship responsibilities.
    • Solicit grants, including writing compelling concept notes and proposals that identify areas of overlap between our work and the interests and motivations of prospective funders.
    • Ensure delivery of best in class stewardship, from formal reports to informal email updates and in person meetings. 
    • Represent Root Capital at meetings and conferences.
    • Help curate, and as appropriate, lead site visits to Root Capital field offices and clients with foundation supporters and prospects.
  2. Collaborate with team leadership on strategic and business planning (20%).
    • Conduct research and analysis for internal knowledge sharing related to philanthropic revenue strategy and planning.
    • Seek ways to optimize frameworks and tools used in the department so that we can meet and exceed goals. 
  3. Organizational responsibilities (10%)
    • Represent the investor relations department to staff throughout the organization to achieve a shared understanding of Root Capital’s philanthropic and investor relationships and fundraising priorities. 
    • Collaborate with other teams to ensure there is a continuous exchange of information and data as needed.
    • Participate in organization-wide meetings and activities.

 Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven ability to create and maintain positive relationships in the foundation community, with a minimum of five years related experience; government funding experience a plus.
  • Demonstrable track record in managing institutional relationships and bringing funding opportunities to closure.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively deliver complex, technical ideas in a compelling form to a variety of constituents in the philanthropic community.
  • Flexibility to play both lead and support roles as appropriate.
  • Highly motivated to create solutions concerning issues relating to poverty, international development, and the environment.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to think creatively, take initiative, and work independently, while enjoying working collaboratively and knowing when to seek support.
  • Ability to focus on the big picture, while maintaining strong attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, empower, coach and motivate staff.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and rapidly evolving work environment.
  • Knowledge of and interest in financial markets, international development, and/or impact investing a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or French a plus.
  • Passion for Root Capital’s commitment to worldwide poverty alleviation and environmental conservation.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
