AgriSol Energy Tanzania Ltd. (“AgriSol”) is currently entertaining
applications for the role of Director of Extension Programs (“Director”)
who will report to the board of the Kilele Foundation to establish agricultural outreach and extension programs for smallholders surrounding AgriSol’s Kilele Farms in Lugufu and Basanza, Kigoma Region, Tanzania. The goals of program are to create educational programs
to improve the productivity of local smallholders and the lives of
their families; to coordinate and implement projects funded by a
to-be-developed community development trust fund; and to lay the foundations of an outgrower program
to supply maize, soybeans and other crops for the production of grains
and animal feed, cooking oil and other value-added agricultural products
at Kilele Farms.
Management Component
Director will oversee all of Kilele Farms’ extension programs including any additional program staff and educators brought in to teach specific classes. S/he will also interview, hire and manage Tanzanian interns.
Research Component
Director will conduct baseline demographic research of the surrounding villages to document current conditions and track future progress. This will include conversations with smallholders to determine their needs and aspirations, which will be incorporated into the design of the extension programs.
Education Component
Director will create and oversee training to improve the production capacities of smallholders. Additional programs will provide all villagers with “lifestyle education” in areas such as health, hygiene, nutrition, personal finance, and other areas requested by smallholders.
Communications Component
Director will develop educational materials in Kiswahili for extension program participants. S/he will also work with the Director of Communications to write a weekly blog post summarizing activities and compile periodic reports and metrics to document the progress of the programs.
Demonstration Farms
Director will help design and oversee the construction of small-scale (under 5 ha) demonstration farms. These farms will incorporate global best practices with regard to efficiency, sustainability, health and safety, as well as affordability.
Outgrower Program
Director will formulate and implement a medium-term plan to transition smallholders from subsistence to commercial production with the option of becoming outgrowers for Kilele Farms.
Community Liaison
Director will coordinate the logistics of the Kilele Foundation’s partner NGOs and other organizations providing services in the area including: health care/vaccinations, community organizing, special education services, etc.
Qualifications
Minimum of B.S./M.S. degree in agronomy or related field, 5–10 years experience and demonstrated skills in farm production and excellent communication skills in Kiswahili and English. Other valuable experience: design and implementation of outreach/extension programs, including outgrower programs; creation of materials for smallholders; managing and directing applied agricultural research program and familiarity with micro-finance.
Salary: Commensurate with experience
