Erasmus Mundus - MATHMODS Scholarships

This project is a renewal proposal for a further five-year period of our EMMC MathMods "Mathematical modelling in engineering: theory, numerics, applications". This EMMC was selected back in 2007 by EACEA (agreement No. 2008-0100) and activated for a five-year period by the MathMods Consortium, starting with the 2008/2010 cycle. "Mathematical modelling" refers to the use of mathematics and related computational tools to bring real-world, challenging and important socio-economic and industrial problems into a form simple enough so that a good solution can be found in a reasonable time, while keeping the relevant features of the problem. Constructing models requires knowledge of enough mathematical theory, methods of solution which are really effective and efficient, computational tools at hand to do it, some knowledge of the field of application, and communicative skills to understand the important elements from experts in that field.

Our master programme tries to put together all these elements to produce professionals able to work in different relevant fields with the highest intellectual level and state-of-the-art tools.MathMods is a joint master's programme of five European universities - L'Aquila (Italy), Hamburg (Germany), Nice (France), Barcelona (Catalonia/Spain) and Gdansk (Poland) - aimed at satisfying the need of experts that may be able to apply rigorous mathematical modelling and computational techniques to solve problems in all areas of engineering. The Consortium is now enlarged with the collaboration of three academic institutions (in Lviv, Ukraine; in Brno, the Czech Republic; and Maryland, US), and can count on the effective support of several companies, research institutes and non-profit organisations in different aspects of the project.

The master programme is structured in two academic years, for a total of 120 ECTS, with 60 ECTS of common and compulsory basic modules, covered in the first academic year, 30 ECTS of a specialization track and 30 ECTS of a Master Thesis on a specific topic. Mobility is implemented in a
simple and uniform way.Our Consortium has reached a good level of integration by today. The slight changes proposed in the study plan and organisation are consequence of our unified vision of the programme. The application, selection and admission procedure is done in a completely centralised
way. Moreover, we will award a joint diploma, except only in one case in which it is not yet legally allowed. Up to now, the students in the programme have enjoyed a total level of employability in industry, and of academic opportunities in Ph.D. programmes.
