World Challenge

World Challenge is a competition organised by BBC World News Limited ("BBC World News") aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grass roots level ("Competition"). We want to hear from our viewers about the social entrepreneurs who are making a difference without costing the earth. It could be you or someone you know.
All nominations, entries and votes related to the Competition must comply with these terms and conditions ("World Challenge Competition Rules"); failure to do so may result in disqualification.
Now in its sixth year, World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level. World Challenge is brought to you by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell and is about championing and rewarding projects and businesses which really make a difference.
  1. Nomination Stage - 15th March until 13th June
  2. Judging Stage - 14th June to 5th July
  3. Voting Stage - 27th September – 12th November
  4. Winners Announced - 4th December
The finalists of World Challenge will be profiled on BBC World News in six 30 minute programmes, and featured in six advertorials in Newsweek magazine

Who can you nominate?
We are looking for your nominations for innovative projects or ideas that demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit working for the benefit of the community whilst adopting a responsible approach.
Projects/small businesses that show initiative, the innovative use of technology or an invention.
Projects/small businesses that increase investment into the local community.
Projects/small businesses that take a responsible approach to the environment in which they are operating.
The following are not eligible for nomination:
  • projects or businesses with a turnover of more than US$20 million per annum;
    projects or businesses developed by a company/organisation with a turnover of more than US$20 million per annum;
  • projects or businesses with more than 50% financing of their running costs in any one of the last five calendar years from intergovernmental organisations (such as the UN, EU, AU, OAS etc) and/or development assistance agencies/initiatives (such as DFID, CIDA, JICA, AusAid etc) and/or philanthropic international foundations (such as the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Gates Foundation etc) and/or grant-making development assistance NGO’s (such as Oxfam, Care, Christian Aid, WWF, Conservation International, IUCN etc);
  • a drawing board idea. We need to see that something is happening;
  • projects or businesses run by employees of BBC World News, the BBC group of companies, Newsweek, Shell, any companies or agencies associated with the Competition, the selection jury and members of their immediate families and households;
  • any of the twelve (12) finalist projects from World Challenge 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and/or 2009 competitions;
  • projects or businesses run by anyone under the age of eighteen (18);
  • projects or businesses with involvement in the sectors of alcoholic drinks, weapons or weapon manufacture, tobacco or pornography, political and lobbying organisations and/or religious groups.
