The Asia-Pacific Young Leaders Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development is conducted by IESD (Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development), which was jointly established in May 2002 by the United Nations Environment Programme and Tongji University.
The program is designed to provide young and promising professionals an opportunity in broadening their knowledge on environment for sustainable development, and to establish a network of young environmental leaders in the Asia-Pacific region on environment for sustainable development.
The Asia Pacific Young Leaders Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development is supported by Mr Hong Luo and expected to be replicated to other regions on a global scale during subsequent years. Other partners include members of the Regional University Consortium and Hanns Seidel Foundation.
The Programme will be held in Shanghai from 15-19 September 2008. The interactive sessions of the 2008 Leadership Programme will be offered by professors of Tongji University, RUC and well-known scholars and leaders from the Asia-Pacific region as well as UNEP officials. It includes field trip/case study, interactive exercise and participant presentations.
Financial Support
The tuition of the programme for self-supported participants, excluding travel and living expenses, is approximately US$2,000. Limited financial resources are available to support candidates from developing countries. Should you require financial support, please specify this in the application form.

Starting with a session on mind, body and soul for holistic lifestyle approaches to environment for sustainable development, this module highlights the human dimension of the overall framework and guides the participants on essential environmental leadership qualities and skills.

Environment Dimension
Detailed sessions on pressing issues of the environment dimension will be made in this module. Sessions include the physical environment (air, water and land), the built environment, climate change, natural resources management, and institutional frameworks for sustainable development.

Social Dimension
Focusing on the social dimension of sustainable development, this module provides lectures and case studies on sustainable development. It includes topics such as poverty and the environment, engagement of civil society, and environmental awareness issues.

Field Trip
During the field trip, participants will get an opportunity to examine issues of sustainable development and reflect upon the lessons learnt from a practical perspective.
