YCI was conceived of by a Canadian and Australian who worked together in the late 1980s on Operation Raleigh, a British program designed to involve youth in science and service projects overseas. Their experience led them to believe that the involvement of youth as central protagonists was critical to the success of any such endeavour and that volunteerism was to be the guiding spirit. They also believed that partnership with local NGO's and a focus on capacity building was critical to the long-term sustainability and relevance of the work. Both had worked in Guyana and they saw that the country faced many challenges.
Thus was born the first Youth Challenge International project in 1990 in Guyana, with seed funding provided by the Canadian International Development Agency. The project was a huge success and the foundation for the future was set. In the intervening years YCI has grown and diversified and now operates in partnership in many countries around the world.

Available for 5 to 10 weeks YCI is a life changing experience. You will join a team of other Canadian youth and local youth in the country and program of your choice. If you are ready to get started, all you need to do is pick up the phone or send us an email. However it does require deep commitment and engagement on your part. Once you are overseas, the work schedule can be demanding and living conditions are very basic. But the rewards are immense - you will tap into hidden personal resources and push yourself to new heights. more
