8-27 October 2007
The first SEASREP-SEPHIS training workshop on alternative research methodologies will take place in Quezon City, Philippines, on 8-27 October 2007. Building upon the comparative experiences of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the workshop aims to provide PhD students from the South an opportunity to strengthen the theoretical and methodological quality of their work under the guidance of experienced researchers also from the South. Three weeks of sharing, knowledge building, and practical activities will enable participants to (re)design their research project, improve their proposal and hone their research skills.
Workshop Structure
The Workshop will be led by a convenor who is a senior researcher with an established reputation in the field. The convenor is responsible for the overall academic content of the workshop. Resource persons from various parts of the South, including local scholars, will deliver lectures and facilitate discussions and/or conduct seminars on methodological and epistemological issues. The workshop will be conducted in English.
Expectations of Participants
Participants are expected to engage in the discussions that follow the lectures. They will be provided readings for each of the lectures and will write bibliographic reviews they will then submit to group discussions. They may choose to explore in greater detail one of the weekly seminar topics or may, in consultation with the convenor, explore an outside topic of relevance to the workshop. Since the workshop focuses on alternative methodologies, participants are expected to review and revise their research projects and present their proposals before the workshop concludes.
Eligibility
The workshop is open to PhD students in Social Sciences and History from the South, who are registered in universities in the South. Students at the early stage of research are preferred.
Expenses
SEASREP and SEPHIS will provide for the participants’ airfare, accommodation, local transportation, and a modest stipend. Local excursions will also be organized.

Interested PhD students need to submit:
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter certifying the student is registered in a university in the South
- Brief description (1-3 pages) of the student’s proposed research project, including the methodology that might be used
