Preferred:
Internews Network is currently seeking a Resident Advisor to lead our Local Voices health reporting project in Ethiopia; Local Voices is designed to support professional radio broadcasters and print journalists in creating high-quality, locally relevant coverage of HIV/AIDS issues for their audiences.
NEED:
Required:
- Minimum of 7 years of journalism experience, of which at least 5 years must be in radio
- At least 5 years experience covering HIV/AIDS and other health issues
- Project and budget management experience, especially of USAID-funded projects.
- Extensive experience packaging feature television and/or radio reports with natural sound using digital editing programs (Adobe Edition/Cool Edit Pro)
- Significant ability to analyze and interpret media reports
- Thorough understanding of the technical, political and social aspects of HIV/AIDS in Africa
- Experience training/mentoring working journalists or journalism students
- Proven interpersonal and networking skills; experience with international organizations and donors especially valuable
- Team-building skills and the ability to manage a diverse staff
- Significant experience working in Africa
- Must be computer literate
- Relevant university degree
Preferred:
- Experience managing media development projects
- Grants management experience
- Familiarity with Ethiopia’s media history, culture, and environment
JD:
- Provide journalism training with specific attention to HIV-related issues to radio journalist, talk show hosts and radio DJs in formal seminar settings and follow-up with regular mentoring;
- Strengthen the HIV/AIDS reporting skills of radio professionals and provide them with the ongoing resources they need to expand and improve their reporting and programming on HIV/AIDS;
- Work closely with in-country partners to assess local media coverage of HIV/AIDS;
- Secure the commitment of radio station and print managers and owners in public education and discussion of HIV/AIDS. Assist and support the development of journalist networks concerned about HIV/AIDS;
- Oversee program monitoring and evaluation plan with the HIV/AIDS Advisor and an outside evaluation firm;
- Hire and supervise local in-country staff;
- Provide final oversight of in-country expenditures;
- Provide training for NGOs and PLHIV networks on effective media relations
