Room to Read’s mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The organization was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life.
We currently work in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and South Africa, countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children, is seeking for Country Director.
Room to Read is a results-driven organization that seeks to intervene early in a child’s life and provide ongoing educational opportunities in their communities. We have developed a successful approach to building educational infrastructure and opportunities which consists of:
- Partnering with communities to build schools through our challenge grant program
- Establishing bi-lingual libraries
- Publishing local language children's books
- Establishing computer and language labs
- Providing long-term scholarships to girls
In Room to Read’s first six years, the global team has already opened over 3,300 libraries with more than 2 million books. We now have over 2,300 girls on long-term scholarship and have opened more than 220 schools. Our long-term goal is to help 10 million children to gain the lifelong gift of education. NEED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Administration or relevant field.
- A minimum of seven to ten years of professional experience in a leadership position.
- Good knowledge and understanding of education issues, including teaching methodologies and community development.
- Strong planning, supervising, and program development skills.
- Ability to travel frequently to provinces throughout Cambodia.
- Ability to interact with, and secure involvement and support of government authorities for Room to Read programs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Khmer.
- Computer literate.
- Finance literate/appreciation.
- Advanced degree in a related field, ie. education, development.
- Prior experience living and/or working in rural areas.
- Prior experience working with schools, teachers, administrators and government officials.
- Experience in successful implementation of a wide range of tasks as well as developing and implementing improvements in a prior position.
- Experience developing and/or implementing large-scale literacy
initiatives.
JD:
- Assume overall management, development and implementation of all program & operational activities.
- Direct the in-country management team towards improving organizational processes and controls & conduct regular meetings to communicate updates and developments as needed.
- Supervise appropriate staff, providing them with all the necessary assistance to ensure that program activities, finance reporting, M&E and all other reporting requirements are carried out effectively and efficiently.
- Communicate all program-related activities, issues, and updates to headquarters and seek approval for budget activities and any related program developments.
- Handle recruitment and training of all staff and contractors.
- Conduct performance appraisals & identify & ensure support for capacity building needs.
- Visit project sites as needed to launch, implement, and supervise activities, including all M&E activities.
- Develop ideas that address organizational priorities and conduct strategic and operational planning exercises.
- Work with relevant in-country and headquarter staff to strengthen and improve program impact & sustainability.
- Work with the Finance/Admin Officer to manage the organization’s legal compliance in Cambodia.
- Explore opportunities for partnerships and knowledge sharing with NGOs, experts and institutions involved in related education initiatives.
- Develop and manage relationships with other NGO’s, government officials and appropriate educational facilities/authorities; conduct meetings with as needed to coordinate panning and implementation of projects.
- Identify, track and document program trends, lessons learned and best practices.
- Represent Room to Read at relevant meetings and plan and host donor visits as needed.
- Participate in any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization.
The salary range for this position will be determined based upon the experience of the candidate hired. Health and accident insurance and retirement benefits are also provided.
