AIT Scholarships

AIT offers a limited number of financial awards in the form of scholarships and assistantships for the Master and Doctoral programs, on a highly competitive basis, to applicants who have been evaluated as outstandingly qualified for admission and who can show proof of financial need during their study at AIT. The AIT financial assistance is intended to meet some of the student’s basic financial needs and to help defray but not fully cover study costs at AIT. Students are expected to supplement the AIT support from their own sources. For non-Thai students, air travel grants to and from AIT are not normally provided.

Applicants who are seeking AIT financial assistance should fill out the Application for AIT Financial Aid form (Form 3), and should provide details on their employment, their personal and family incomes. Applicants for AIT financial assistance must also submit a 1 page essay on their reasons for applying and how they can contribute to the development of their home country and the region after study completion at AIT.

Students receiving financial aid are expected to render assistantship to the Institute. Admission to the Institute shall be conditional upon the agreement of the applicant to work as student assistant. Details will be given in the Admissions Offer Letter.
Scholarships
AIT Scholarships are provided by AIT’s partners: governments, international funding agencies, foundations and corporate/private sectors according to partners’ conditions based on field of study, nationality and/or gender. The scholarships may cover tuition and fees, and/or a monthly bursary towards the cost of books, food and miscellaneous expenses, as well as standard room accommodation rent on campus. Some scholarships not awarded by AIT but administered by the Institute operate in the same way as AIT scholarships. Once accepted, the terms of the scholarships are not open to further negotiation.

Students on AIT scholarships must be in full-time attendance for the period of their award, except for approved leave. Financial aid will terminate if the student is dismissed, or may be terminated for other reasons at the discretion of the School Dean or the President.

The AIT scholarship is paid and administered by the Institute and any unspent funds due to dismissal or resignation are either returned to the partner/donor or reallocated at a later date if approved by the partner/donor as part of an additional scholarship. Awards are made for a stated number of semesters of study, normally four for the Master and six for the Doctoral program. If for any reason the course of study is extended beyond the period of time specified in the award, the recipient is responsible for meeting all costs associated with the extension. Under certain circumstances, an exemption may be granted from the tuition fee but not the registration and other associated fees. The student must initiate a request for exemption in writing through his/her Advisor or through the Chairperson of the Program Committee and the Field of Study Coordinator. The approval of the School Dean is required before an exemption can be granted.

A scholarship student who, of his/her own accord and without AIT's approval, leaves the Institute before completing his/her program of study is liable to repay all or part of the scholarship award.
1. Bursary Grants
  • Students in receipt of the bursary under an AIT scholarship must open an account with the bank on campus. The bursary is paid into the student's bank account.
  • The bursary is a partial contribution for books, food, accommodation, minimum electricity cost and other expenses. Even when the bursary is awarded, students may find it necessary to supplement the scholarship from their own funds.
  • The length of a scholarship awards varies, and the bursary may be awarded for the complete normal study period (4 semesters for Master degree student or 6 semesters for Doctoral degree students) or for only part of it.
  • If a student voluntarily discontinues attendance on a full-time basis, the bursary will be terminated three days after the cessation of full-time attendance or, in the semester break, three days after the date of leaving AIT.
  • If a student is dismissed, the bursary will continue for a period of ten days following the notice of dismissal

2. Travel Grants

  • Neither inward nor homeward travel grant is included in the AIT scholarship, unless this is specified in the donor funding. However, those students in receipt of travel grants are entitled to air travel only to the international airport nearest to their home (economy class). This travel grant cannot be used for any purpose other than travel to the student's home country.
  • Eligibility for return air travel terminates 30 days after completion of the student's program of study. Travel grants provide air tickets, but are never available as cash grants.
  • Arrangements for home air travel are made through the Registry.

Assistantships

Assistantships at the Master's and Doctoral programs are awarded to assist bright but financially needy students and are tenable only for study at AIT. Qualified applicants are eligible to apply for the Institute Assistantships covering tuition fees for a fixed number of credits. Assistantships are offered based on merit (judged on the basis of cumulative GPA and class rank in their previous degree) or based on demonstrated financial need. Under this scheme, the student is charged tuition fees for the credits not covered by the assistantship in earlier semesters and AIT covers the assistantship credits granted in later semesters.

Candidates selected for assistantships are: - provided with opportunities for real application of their academic, personal and professional interests through actual practice in the workplace, and- given assurance of some financial support even before their enrolment for the first semester.

Assistantships do not cover the registration fees, associated fees and other incidental expenses as well as living costs, which are the responsibility of individual fellows.

The offer of assistantship issued to an applicant is not transferable to another applicant.

Partnership with Other Universities

AIT has partnership agreements with several leading universities in Asia, in Europe and around the world. With these universities, specific cooperation such as student exchange, two-stage degree program, dual degree program and special student enrollment schemes are implemented.
