MBIO - Erasmus Mundus Master of Bioethics

Health care professionals and researchers find themselves increasingly confronted with moral questions and dilemmas. The need to reflect on the moral dimension of advances in science and technology, as well as the desire to enhance the public's health has, in many areas of the world, led to the establishment of various forms of national, regional and local ethics committees for research and clinical aspects as well as research and teaching positions at universities or colleges. In these various settings, there is a need for people who have received training in bioethics.

Since 2000 the Master of Bioethics program started with a strong European integrated common curriculum that filled the need for European level education with a broad  ultidisciplinary scope which could compete with the highest excellence programs organized outside Europe, and which could attract both students from outside Europe as well as European students with international scope for an advanced master education. The curriculum has been designed as a combination of 5 educational components provided in a one year time frame: core bioethics courses (18 ECTS); lecture series on bioethics (6 ECTS); specializing courses (9 ECTS); a research component (21 ECTS) and a bioethics training (6 ECTS).

In the first semester the students stay at the K.U.Leuven (Belgium), in the second semester they stay at the R.U.Nijmegen (The Netherlands) and the University of Padova (Italy). In order to achieve good course integration, the consortium has developed a common set of standards and mechanisms for the application, admission, student selection, individual study program selection, score registration, thesis guidelines and examination of students. The website provides all information about the MBIO. The International Office (K.U.Leuven) supports all visa applications of the students. The participating universities also ensure access to housing services, student services, libraries and a blackboard system during the whole academic year. Internal and external quality assurance mechanisms have been established to ensure the quality of the program.
