Oak Human Rights Fellowships

The Oak Institute for the Study of International Human Rights was established in 1998 by a generous grant from the Oak Foundation. Each year, it hosts an Oak Human Rights Fellow to teach and conduct research while residing at the College. The Institute organizes lectures and other events centered around the fellow's area of expertise.

The purpose of the fellowship is to offer an opportunity for one prominent practitioner in international human rights to take a sabbatical leave from front-line work to spend the fall semester (September-December) in residence at Colby. This provides the Fellow time for respite, reflection, research, and writing. While all human rights practitioners are eligible, we especially encourage applications from those who are currently or were recently involved in "on-the-ground" work at some level of personal risk. Following the period of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to return home to continue her/his human rights work.

Fellowship will offer a semester in residence at Colby, giving respite from front-line human rights work, a $32,000 stipend, plus medical insurance, transportation, housing and utilities.

Eligibility for the Oak Fellowship is restricted to those whose work takes place primarily outside the United States; selection criteria include achievements in the struggle for human rights, the need for respite,
removal from danger, and the ability to contribute to the Colby community.

AFSP Grant

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), a 501(c)(3) organization, has been at the forefront of a wide range of suicide prevention initiatives -- each designed to reduce loss of life from suicide. We are investing in groundbreaking research, new educational campaigns, innovative demonstration projects and critical policy work.

AFSP research grants support studies that aim to increase understanding of the causes of suicide and factors related to suicide risk, or to test treatments and other interventions designed to prevent suicide. Investigators from all academic disciplines are eligible to apply, and both basic science and applied research projects will be considered, providing the study has an essential focus on suicide or suicide prevention. AFSP grants are awarded for one or two-year periods. Grant applications are not accepted from for-profit organizations, or from federal or state government agencies.

A currently funded grantee may not submit a new application until completion of the ongoing grant and submission of a Final Report within the prescribed period (i.e., 60 days following grant completion or termination).

New grantees must begin their studies within six months of the approved start date. Failure to begin the study within this time frame may result in withdrawal of the grant award.

Please be aware that AFSP expects that funded investigators will assist us in the important task of disseminating new research finding to our lay constituents and donors, who are largely responsible for generating financial support for our research grants program. Following completion, an investigator may be invited to present their study’s results at an AFSP-sponsored research forum, and your acceptance of the AFSP grant funding implies your willingness to do this, if asked.

Applicants should carefully review the grant policy statement for additional guidelines and restrictions. Grant applications that do not conform to the stated policies will not be reviewed. Forms for grant applications can be obtained by using the links below.

A grant may only be resubmitted twice.
Grant Categories

AFSP offers six types of research grants:

* Distinguished Investigator Grants for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.
* Standard Research Grants for up to $75,000 over two years are awarded to individual investigators at any level.
* Linked Standard Research Grants for three or more sites of up to $225,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at any level.
* Young Investigator Grants for up to $85,000 over two years are awarded to investigators at the level of assistant professor or lower. In addition to a maximum of $75,000 for the investigator’s research, these grants provide an additional $10,000 ($5,000 per year) for an established suicide researcher who will mentor the Young Investigator.
* Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for up to $100,000 over two years are awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have not had more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a progressive stipend of $42,000 in the first year and $46,000 in the second, with an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.
* Pilot Grants for up to $30,000 over one or two years are awarded to investigators at any level. These grants provide seed money for new projects that have the potential to lead to subsequent larger investigations.

Grant Application Funding and Reporting Cycle

New grantees must begin their studies within six months of the approved start date. Failure to begin the study within this time frame may result in withdrawal of the grant award.

Erasmus Mundus - GLITEMA Scholarships

The GLITEMA (German Literature in the European Middle Ages) EMMC is an integrated Master Course run by a consortium of three full partner universities (Porto, PT [co-ordinator], Bremen, Palermo), supported by a number of associated partner HEIs (Amsterdam, FU Berlin, Cairo, Greifswald, Olomouc, Ljubljana, Moscow [Lomonosov], North Carolina, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Compostela, Vienna, Zurich).

The basic premise for the GLITEMA EMMC is the understanding that Medieval culture, in order to be fully comprehended, must be analysed from within its wider European context: in particular, the traditional “national philological approach”, which has informed Medieval German Studies since their inception during the 19th century, does not allow students to understand the full extent to which today’s national cultures in Europe have their roots in a common – Medieval – past. Thus, this EMMC aims to emphasize the pre-national nature of German Medieval Studies and analyse them from within their European context; to this end, the potentialities of trans-national student and staff mobility within the EU will be used to underpin the European approach to the subject.

Since most of the course will be taught in German, a good working knowledge of the language (level C.1 in Bremen and B.2 in Palermo and Porto) is a pre-requirement; tuition in this language will be offered by Palermo and Porto, while students are also expected to gain linguistic skills in Italian and/or Portuguese through intensive language training programmes.

A maximum of thirty students will be selected for the programme; only those candidates who have obtained a good first cycle degree in a relevant area of studies will be eligible for selection.

the Consortium will be able to award the following number of stipends to GLITEMA-EMMC students:

1. Students from the European Union and countries which are participating in the Erasmus Mundus Programme according to Article 9 of the Programme Decision

Erasmus Mundus - EUROCULTURE Scholarships

The Erasmus Mundus MA programme Euroculture is a unique, multilingual, interdisciplinary and inter-university project. Its aim is to prepare graduates from Europe and third-countries for professions in which knowledge of present Europe and European Union institutions are of relevance. The focus of the programme is on cultural and social developments: its inheritance as well as its standards, values and citizenship. Because of the multidisciplinary studies approach, the Euroculture programme stands out from many other European Regional Studies programmes. From the beginning of the programme in 1999, Euroculture was used as a concept to reflect in an interdisciplinary way on the many different expressions and manifestations of self-understandings of societies, social groups and individuals of, about and within Europe. Its core questions are:

Whether, to what extent and in which forms does a common and unique European culture exist and how is it related to other regional or non-European cultures?
How is Europe and how are cultural transformations perceived within Europe and from the outside?
What is the mutual impact of political and social processes on European culture(s) and culture(s) in Europe?

These questions are discussed and analysed in an interdisciplinary setting which includes the knowledge of historical perspectives, political issues, social relations, legal issues and religious traditions.
Through the exchange with other European universities, the Euroculture Master of Arts programme also offers the chance to gain experience with other languages, perspectives and cultural practices.
As of September/October 2006, the load of the programme is 90 ECTS-credits, which equals 16 months of full time study. The Euroculture programme brings together some 120 students who have to pass a selection procedure to be admitted. The programme is taught in the native language and/or in English and is open to students who have successfully completed a university BA programme in the fields of European Studies, History, Theology, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, International Relations, Law, Cultural studies, Anthropology, Psychology or Sociology.
The Erasmus Mundus MA programme Euroculture for advanced students is offered by a consortium of six well-established European universities.

ITTO Fellowships

The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) was established under the auspices of the United Nations in 1986 amidst increasing worldwide concern for the fate of tropical forests. While almost everyone was alarmed at the rate of deforestation occurring in many tropical countries, there was also considerable agreement that the tropical timber trade was one of the keys to economic development in those same countries.

ITTO offers fellowships through the Freezailah Fellowship Fund to promote human resource development and to strengthen professional expertise in member countries in tropical forestry and related disciplines. The goal is to promote the sustainable management of tropical forests, the efficient use and processing of tropical timber, and better economic information about the international trade in tropical timber.

As of November 2009, the Programme, which began in 1989, has enabled more than 1000 young and mid-career people from over 40 countries working for government, research institutions, civil society and the private sector to pursue their professional development and improve their career prospects. The total value of fellowships awarded to date amounts to about US$6.1 million; the Programme supports mainly short-term activities, such as participation in international conferences, training courses and study tours, but also helps people to prepare manuals and monographs and provides small grants for post-graduate study. Click on Resources to read articles written by ITTO fellows on their fellowship activities.

The maximum amount for a fellowship grant is US$10,000. Only nationals of ITTO member countries are eligible to apply, and fellowships are awarded mainly to nationals of developing member countries.

Eligible activities

1. Participation in international/regional conferences, short-term training courses, training internships at industries, research and educational institutions, study tours, and lecture/demonstration tours;
2. Technical document preparation, publication and dissemination, such as manuals and monographs;
3. Small grants for post-graduate studies.

ITTO gives preference to short-term activities.

Award

The maximum amount for a fellowship is US$10,000. ITTO Fellowships provides tuition/training/conference fees, transportation fees, daily subsistence allowance, book allowance and other allowances. For post-gradate studies, only a partial tuition fee or a small research grant can be provided. Approved Fellowships are non-transferable to other programmes or institutions.
Eligibility

1. Only nationals of ITTO Member countries are eligible to apply.
2. Awards are to be made to individuals not to institutions.
3. Previous ITTO Fellowship awardees are not eligible to apply for another ITTO Fellowship within two years of receiving the first award and submitting to the Secretariat a final report on the activity for which the award was made.

Appraisal

Applications are appraised by a Fellowship Selection Panel twice a year. The Panel comprises six individuals, three from producer member countries and three from consumer member countries, and is chaired by the Vice Chairman of the ITTC.
Priority areas

Based on the goals and cross-cutting strategies identified in the ITTO Action Plan 2008-2011, eligible activities will aim at developing human resources and professional expertise in one or more of the following areas (in no priority order):

1. Increasing production and further processing of tropical timber and other forest products from sustainably managed and legally harvested sources;
2. Increasing efficiency in harvesting, processing and utilization of tropical timber from sustainably managed and legally harvested sources;
3. Improving data and knowledge, projections and competitiveness on trade in timber and timber products in international markets;
4. Increasing supplies of tropical timber from sustainably managed and legally harvested sources;
5. Better securing tropical forest resources;
6. Sustainably managing tropical forest resource;
7. In any of the above areas (a-f), the following are relevant:

LAPA Fellowships

The Program in Law and Public Affairs (LAPA) at Princeton University invites outstanding faculty, independent scholars, lawyers, and judges to apply for appointments as residential fellows for the academic year. Each year, through its Fellows program, LAPA brings to Princeton world-class experts on the law. Successful candidates will devote an academic year in residence at Princeton engaging in their own research and in the intellectual life of the campus. Under exceptional circumstances, applications for only one semester in residence may be considered.

We plan to name up to four general LAPA Fellows plus one Microsoft/LAPA Fellow who specializes in intellectual property or the economic organization of society, and one Mellon/LAPA Fellow in Law and the Humanities. Applicants to the program will be considered for all of the applicable fellowships, depending upon the applicant’s proposed research project. Applying with a stated interest in a designated fellowship (see below) will not prejudice an applicant from being considered for one of the general fellowships and vice versa. All fellowships are based upon the same salary calculations and carry the same privileges and conditions.

LAPA Fellows devote the major portion of their time to their own research and writing on law-related subjects of empirical, interpretive, doctrinal and/or normative significance. In addition, LAPA Fellows are expected to participate in LAPA programs, including a biweekly faculty-graduate seminar and a weekly discussion group, as well as some public events and conferences. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Princeton at least four days a week during the academic term. They enjoy access to Firestone Library and a wide range of other activities and intellectual resources throughout the University. Some Fellows may be invited to teach a course in one of Princeton’s graduate or undergraduate programs, subject to the needs of the University, approval of the Dean of the Faculty, and the cooperation of the sponsoring academic department.

The Fellows program is open to all regardless of citizenship, but it does not support work toward the completion of a degree. The program also does not support extended off-campus research. All applicants should have received a doctorate, juris doctor, or an equivalent professional degree by the beginning of the fellowship.

Since Princeton does not have a law school, LAPA is the primary site on the Princeton campus for law-related activity. The Program in Law and Public Affairs is housed in the Woodrow Wilson School for Public and International Affairs on the Princeton campus and is co-sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School, the University Center for Human Values and the University. LAPA-affiliated faculty, graduate students and undergraduates come from all over the university and from all disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, as well as from the sciences and engineering. LAPA encourages its fellows to develop ties with relevant departments and disciplines around campus.

Financial Support for Fellows
Salaries vary according to individual circumstances but will not exceed a maximum that is set each fall. Fellows from academic institutions normally receive one-half their academic-year salaries for the appointment period at Princeton up to an annually set maximum amount, which may be lower than half salary for those on the high end of the salary spectrum. LAPA salaries will not be below a university specified minimum. While additional salary may be paid to Fellows who teach a course, this opportunity cannot be guaranteed. In general, we anticipate that Fellows visiting from other universities will come with sabbatical support from their home institutions, which would allow them to maintain their full salaries, although this is not a requirement for receiving a LAPA fellowship. Fellows who do not come with additional funding have been able to live modestly in Princeton for the year just on LAPA support. If applicants do not have sabbatical funds but would like to get their full salaries for the year, we recommend also applying for other sources of funds to supplement LAPA salaries. While at Princeton, each fellow will be provided with an office equipped with a computer and telephone.

Fellowship Residency Requirements
Fellows are expected to be in residence at Princeton at least four days each week during the fall and spring academic terms. Fellows should plan to attend both the LAPA Seminars, held on alternating Monday afternoons followed by dinner, as well as the fellows’ lunch each Thursday. They should also plan to attend major LAPA events for which advance notice will be provided. Fellows are welcome but not required to participate in other University conferences, programs, or events in their field(s) of interest.

Research Proposal
In evaluating an application, the selection committee looks particularly closely at the proposal outlining work the applicant proposes to do while in residence at Princeton. Successful LAPA applicants should demonstrate substantial expertise in law-related matters; however, in explaining research projects, applicants would be well advised to write for an audience of academic generalists. LAPA is particularly interested in potential Fellows with interests in policy or in normative or interpretive inquiry. The program does not support, as a primary activity, off-site fieldwork or work in remote archives, development of course materials, work in legal practice, direct advocacy of causes or residence elsewhere. The program is designed to give Fellows a year in residence at Princeton for scholarly reflection and writing, and prospective Fellows might consider timing their applications for a year in which time devoted to reflection and writing on a substantial project would be most crucial for them.

Selection Criteria
The selection committee, made up of Princeton faculty associated with the program, will evaluate applicants on the basis of (1) the quality of their achievements in their field of specialization and their ability to benefit from the activities of the program; (2) the quality and significance of their proposed projects; (3) the contributions they are likely to make in the future to legal scholarship and practice; and (4) their ability to contribute to intellectual life in legal studies at Princeton. In any given year, the program tries to get a mix of senior and junior scholars, domestic and international scholars, and those based in law schools or in the practice of law on the one hand and those whose homes are in other disciplines on the other.

The General LAPA Fellows Program
Drawn from law schools, the social sciences, the humanities, and from the world of policy-making and legal practice, LAPA's Fellows are engaged during their stay at Princeton in cutting-edge research about the law, legal practices and legal institutions. The Fellows enhance Princeton's tradition of excellence in undergraduate- and graduate-level intellectual inquiry into law-related issues, and they provide an intellectual critical mass for innovative scholarly collaborations about law and legal institutions. The Fellows also add to the group of normatively engaged scholars on campus who consider either policy or ethics as a substantial component of their work. With the new fellowship in Law and the Humanities, we will increase our contributions to the humanistically oriented fields on campus as well.

LAPA does not designate annual themes for its Fellows cohort so applications on all law-related subjects are welcome for the general Fellows program. That said, the selection committee in any given year does give consideration in the last phases of the decision process to whether a particular setof Fellows would complement each other, bring synergies to the program and otherwise show signs of being more than the sum of their individual proposals. Because LAPA gets many more outstanding applications than it has fellowships, one of the final elements of the selection process is the coherent composition of the group. Intellectual clusters are often favored, as are mixes of senior and junior Fellows, domestic and international Fellows, and Fellows based inside and outside law schools.

One of our general Fellows who will teach an undergraduate course through LAPA will be named the Martin and Kathleen Crane Fellow in Law and Public Affairs.
Microsoft/LAPA Fellow in Law, Property, and the Economic Organization of Society
Thanks to the generosity of the Microsoft Corporation, one of the LAPA fellows will be selected because he or she is making important contributions to research and teaching in law, property, and the economic organization of society. While we prefer to find someone whose primary interests are in intellectual property and/or in information technology and the law, the description of the fellowship also reaches more broadly:

The law plays a crucial role in defining property rights and constituting markets. LAPA fellows appointed to the position will study important problems related to defining and regulating property. Issues related to information technology now loom especially large. Such issues embrace many areas of the law, including copyright, patent, antitrust, free speech, privacy, telecommunications law, tax law, and international trade law. LAPA will make a special effort to secure fellows who have some expertise relevant to information policy issues. The position may also support study of other topics related to the economic organization of society. For example, some countries are now seeking to establish free markets in societies dominated by distrust, corruption, or heavy regulation. Other countries must find ways to adapt institutions so that they remain competitive in the new economy of the 21st century. Whether their economies are old or new, countries must decide how to protect the interests of workers, how to ensure corporate accountability, and how to deal with the huge inequalities produced by modern capitalism.

We anticipate that the Microsoft/LAPA Fellow will be involved with the growing group on the Princeton campus interested in intellectual property and information technology. Applicants may indicate their interest in this fellowship without prejudicing their consideration for a general LAPA Fellowship.

Mellon/LAPA Fellow in Law and the Humanities
LAPA will appoint a fellow whose research is concentrated within the general field of Law and the Humanities. We anticipate that a LAPA Fellow in Law and the Humanities will be interested in explorations of the language, rhetoric, presuppositions and cultural rituals associated with the law – or in linkages between law and literary and cultural studies, including literary theory, anthropology, linguistics, and related fields. The description of this fellowship reaches broadly across humanistic inquiry:

Legal scholars and practitioners read and argue within the constraints of the law and its traditions. Yet law does not stand alone: it is embedded in social practices and cultural understandings. The pragmatic horizon of most legal studies may exclude, or repress, crucial issues. What, for instance, is the relation of law to violence? What its relation to persuasion, and the rhetorical tradition that long ago was so closely identified with law speech, but now is studied within departments of literature? While law schools necessarily emphasize knowledge and expertise that are useful to understanding and practicing the law, there is much to be gained from thinking about law in relation to other fields of inquiry, especially those that are centrally concerned with interpretation, evidence, and persuasion.

We anticipate that the Mellon/LAPA Fellow will be involved with the growing group on the Princeton campus interested in law and the humanities. Applicants may indicate their interest in this fellowship without prejudicing their consideration for a general LAPA Fellowship.

APPLICATIONS FOR ALL FELLOWSHIPS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED USING THE ONLINE APPLICATION process. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS 5:00 PM (EST) MONDAY, NOVEMBER 8.
