The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.
UN Environment’s Asia and the Pacific Office works in 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It works in close partnership with key stakeholders including governments, the private sector, civil society, and other UN agencies. UN Environment's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific helps to implement all UN Environment's programmes and projects in the region by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental problems and emergencies.
The Communications Support Internship is for six months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days (35-40 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Regional Information Officer, the Intern will:
- Coordinate information from programme staff to identify stories for preparing, scheduling and posting on UN Environment Web sites and Communications materials
- Update and design new programmes information materials for communications and resource mobilization
- Perform other duties as required.

- Clear and effective verbal and written communication of policy issues;
- Listens to others, correctly interprets messages and responds appropriately;
- Asks questions for clarification and exhibits interest in having two-way communication;
- Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
- Ability to design communications materials and promote on-line, especially for websites and social media.
Teamwork:
- Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals;
- Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise;
- Willing to learn from others; places office agenda before personal agenda
Client Orientation:
- Knowledge in environmental and sustainability issues and communications especially in web site management and social media;
- Ability to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks effectively and on time.
Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); preferably, enrolled in a advanced university (Master's degree or equivalent) with a focus on natural resources management or sustainable development;
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
d. Be computer literate in standard software application;
e. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
f. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.. However, applicants are encouraged to list all relevant work experience such as experience in managing, planning and designing communications materials, websites and content.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language or an Asian language is desirable.
