The salt iodization project aims to increase the proportion of households with access to adequately iodized salt to at least 90% in 13 selected countries. The Salt Iodization Associate will manage national projects in Ethiopia, and will coordinate all field activities according to the project implementation timeframe. He/She will be responsible for the project teams in Ethiopia and must ensure the delivery of the program under the direct supervision of the Salt Manager.

Responsibilities
  •  Lead with Food, Medicine and Health Care Administration and Control Authority (FMHACA) and International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (ICCIDD) experts, consultants and the salt industry on implementation of targeted quality assurance and quality control activities which lead towards the establishment of a customized national Quality Management system based on ISO17020.
  • As needed, conducts national salt fortification reviews to assess the status to date, the nature of the salt industry and its environment.
  • Prepares series of national and regional meetings among major key players in the salt industry to review equipment, training and technical support needs.
  • Facilitate, develop and implement national plans of actions for the iodized salt supply.
  • Helps identifying and overseeing experts and consultants to deliver the different project activities.
  • Identifies innovative mechanisms to support cottage and small-scale salt farms to assure universal iodized salt.
  • Coordinates all field activities in regard to supply and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Keep good communications with all related partners, including UNICEF, salt industry and government agencies.
  • Ensures that all project activities are completed according to the national project implementation timeframe.
  • Writes and ensures timely submission of implementation, progress and financial reports to the Manager, Universal Salt Iodization (USI) Program and Ethiopia Country Manager.
  • Coordinates all current and planned GAIN-led M&E activities related to USI in Ethiopia.
  • Travels to targeted districts to deliver technical assistance and to monitor progress.
  • Represents GAIN at technical meetings and conferences, upon request.
  • Aids in annual work and budget planning processes.

Experience
  • At least five years of experience in developing and managing projects, preferably in the salt industry at international level, or 5 years of international or national program management experience.

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Proven ability to work in an environment requiring collaboration with government, industries and international organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects including negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage national team and contractors to deliver high-quality results.
  • Ability to use initiative, prioritize, multi-task, and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Flexible, goal-oriented and willingness to travel in challenging environments, possibly up to 100 days per year.
  • Computer literacy with excellent Excel, MS word, Outlook, and Power Point skills.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English is a must. French or other languages are a strong plus.

Education
  • Masters in food technology, nutrition, business administration or related fields.
