M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies

The Southeast Asian Studies Program is multidisciplinary and offers courses in history, arts, culture, economics and political science. Contemporary issues that cut across disciplines are thus easy to address and receive particular attention as part of the studies under the Program. The Program has as an integral part a "Traveling Classroom" involving a trip to another Southeast Asian country, in addition to short field trips within Thailand.
Students in the Program come from all over the world, bringing classes of international environment. Beside Southeast Asians including Thais, foreign students are Americans, Canadians, Norwegians, Swedes, Japanese, Irish, Belgians, as well as Indians, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans.
The program is a cooperation of the Graduate School and Institute of Asian Studies of Chulalongkorn University. Faculty members and researchers of both institutions with reputation of regional and international stature contribute to the teaching courses offered. In this sense, Southeast Asian Studies by Southeast Asian point of view will be expounded. Scholars are also invited to give lectures. Special talks by world-renowned authority on appropriate topics are frequently organized. The program is very well backed up by library facilitates of the university. Students are further facilitated by the Thai Studies Program at the Faculty of Arts which has long been in operation. Students in the Program are given the option to choose some courses from a range of courses in Thai Studies Program. The Program also works on Asia-Europe student exchange with the International Institute of Asian Studies at Leiden University in The Netherlands.
Objectives of the WMSEA Fellowship Program
To provide financial support to grantees from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam to study for the International Master Degree Program in Southeast Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. The program is designed to create an alternative insight and an alternative understanding of the region from the region’s standpoint. This in turn will result in the development and the strengthening of younger generation of the region’s academic and intellectual community, shaping a better future of peace and harmony.
Applicant’s Qualifications:
  • Age: 20 to 35 years old.
  • Nationality: Laos, Cambodian, Thai or Vietnamese.
  • Residence: permanent resident of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, or Thailand, and ready to return home after graduation.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in any field of study with good academic records.
  • Career: relevant to Southeast Asian Studies.
  • Interest: keen in issues concerning Southeast Asia.

Application Requirements:

  1. An Essay written on a separate sheet of paper with your full name clearly marked on the top of each page, not exceeding two typed pages. The essay should include a brief description of your study or research plan, field of interest, and your reasons for wishing to pursue them. Include reasons which tie your plan to study in the MA program in Southeast Asian Studies Chulalongkorn University to your future academic and/or career goals, and the reasons why you need financial support from the fellowship.Your research plan is the most import part and will be seriously considered. The topic of your research should be on areas related to Southeast Asian cross border issues.
  2. Test of English Proficiency Accepted are TOEFL, IELTS or local English Language Test, i.e. CU-TEP in Thailand, ITP: Institutional Testing Program in Cambodia. In case you do not have an English Test score, other evidence showing your good command of English must be provided; for example, a transcript with English course scores or grades.
  3. Original copy of the transcript of your bachelor’s degree study
  4. A Copy of your bachelor’s degree
  5. 2 letters of of recommendation preferably one from the applicant's professor, the other from the applicant’s employer.
  6. Completed application form* with the applicant’s two-inch photo attached on it.
